Book Club Meeting #6--The Paris Wife by Paula McClain

Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking, fast-living, and free-loving life of Jazz Age Paris. As Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history and pours himself into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises, Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Eventually they find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage—a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for.

A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty, The Paris Wife is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley.

We still need a volunteer to host book club next weekend! We will be very grateful and I'm sure you'll probably have a lot of leftovers for yourself. Please let me know!

I hope the event continues to be in Denver, whether it's in a restaurant or home. I haven't been able to attend many events b/c they have been in the 'burbs. Either way, I'm looking forward to discussing this great read!

Unfortunately, I don't have the space in my house.

Ladies - an out of town family birthday event has been planned with my in-laws and I'm not sure if I'll be back in time to join you all. Will try and come if I can. Otherwise, have fun!

I read this book last year with a book club in Milwaukee. Can't wait to hear all your feedback about it!

Do we have a book picked for the next book club? I just picked up "the amazing adventures of diet girl" and it sounds really cute (I'm still finishing The Paris Wife so I haven't actually started it yet). It is based on a blog so it looks pretty light hearted.

I just looked at the summary for "The Amazing Adventures of Diet Girl" and it looks like a fun read. I am totally up for it.

    • Brittany

Book hasn't been picked yet, but I have a very long list to sort through! I'll try to announce it soon to give everyone time to read.

Oops! I just saw this! Jill, are you still interested in hosting? If so, awesome! Please send me your address.

Okay ladies, we need a volunteer to host our book club potluck brunch! Don't worry about the current number of RSVPs. We have never had more than 14 people attend a book club. We will just be very grateful that you volunteered your space, and you're sure to get leftovers! Please let me know! Your address will not be shared publicly. It will be emailed to those who have RSVP'd 'yes' a few days beforehand. Also, don't forget to bring some French food for our brunch--baguettes, cheese, wine, fruit tarts, quiche, etc.

    October 6

  • Stacey

I just got the book and started- so excited!

Assuming that this event stays on the larger side with 10 or more people, we're going to have a French brunch at someone's house! Don't all volunteer at once. When the event gets closer, we can post with what we'll bring. Great options would be--baguette, wine, cheese, quiche, pastries, fruit tarts, etc. Ya know, French stuff.

I'm sad to miss this event. I read the book and was looking forward to discussing it, but I am flying out of town for work that day, so I won't be able to make it.

Hi ladies-- I anticipated going to last month's book club- the Rosie Project. I received the book from Amazon to late to read it and attend the brunch. The book was excellent and I'm looking forward to this next meeting.
