Movies of the New Cult Canon 4.50 4.5010

There are blockbuster movies. And then there is ground-breaking cinema. And almost never the 'twain shall meet.

From the bone-crunching Fight Club, to the surreal I Heart Huckabees. From the imaginative Spirited Away, to the droll Office Space. From the tragic-hero epic Donnie Darko, to the gritty post-noir Brick. These are the movies that were largely ignored in the theaters, only to grip viewers who were astute enough to search them out, or for the fortunate ones who stumbled upon them.

Our group is dedicated to reviewing the movies of the New Cult Canon suggested by the AV Club of The Onion, who have somehow fished out only the best movies of the last decade from a sea of mediocre filmography.

All of these movies are already out on video, and chances are you may have even seen them. So kick back, relax, and enjoy some fresh-popped goodness at a nice home screening with other people who enjoy the more subtle twists of cinema. Discussions to follow afterward.

You can find the full list of the New Cult Canon here: http://www.avclub.com/features/the-new-cult-canon/

For the moment, movies are chosen by one of three ways:

-- BY POPULAR DEMAND --
Every month, a small batch of movies, usually of the same genré, are chosen from the list at the New Cult Canon. From that, a poll will be set up so that members of the group can vote on the next flick the group will watch. The one with most votes at the end of two weeks will be the one screened
WHEN SHOWN: every 3rd Sunday of the month, when convenient

-- SLEEPER HIT --
Any decent cult movie veteran knows that good movies slip through the cracks despite even the best of intentions. A random movie on the Canon will be pulled from a hat from the movies that were voted down in the last poll. Just think. If the movie you wanted didn't make it, it gets a second chance to see the light of day... or rather, the darkness of our screening room!
WHEN SHOWN: a weekday night in the 4th week of the month, when convenient

-- DEUS EX MACHINA --
Occasionally, there are movies on the Canon that must not be missed. Some movies are so poignant, powerful, and moving that there really should be an exception made for these. These hand-picked films will be announced as they come to the forefront on the list.
WHEN SHOWN: 1st Sunday evening of that month, if a movie is chosen

What members are saying

It's fun to watch and discuss strange films. The organizer does a great job of including everyone in the conversation as well as researching the films. He's the best!

Great place to see some great movies and meet some great people. Glad I went.
