Hi there! If anyone is coming from greater Boston, I'd love a ride for this.

Thanks for the warning Mike. If the sheets of ice are on exposed steeps, it's a no-go since I don't use an ice axe... but if they are just random sheets of ice on less exposed areas then I'm OK with it and have done areas like that on Mt Dickey in Waterville Valley.

Yes, the Wapack Trail has a few stream beds that continually melt and freeze leaving behind some diamond hard slickness. But they're few and brief, and you can wildcat around them..

The Marion Davis has a prominent switchback that's usually covered w/ ice. It's slow going on the descent w/ limited spots to wildcat unless you bushwack thru some low lying Mtn Laurel and Hobblebush ...

About 2 years ago we had to turn the group around on Pack Monadnock- It was solid ice at the summit and full crampon conditions- so even the little peaks can be challenging. Actually it makes sense, it's warmer at lower levels so more thawing and refreezing. Ice axe can be be a hazard if you don't know how to use it.

Oh, its not ice ax material. The patches are small, less than 10 ft long. I wore the yaks and had to go off trail on a few places. definitely not anything to cancel the hike over. I had started without the yaks because it was just a couple of inches of packed snow - not slippery at all. About half way up I encountered the ice and put on the yaks. No problem after that.

Next Thursday looks pretty good. How are the conditions? I don't snowshoe. Can the trails be done with microspikes?

    January 25, 2013

      Hiya Ed....
The trails are nice a packed down. Micro's will do just fine unless there's some significant snowfall between now and the 31st....

    John,
I decided to head up Pack Monadnock this morning even though the group had dwindled to 0. I'd never been up there before. I enjoyed the entire trip, although I went in the reverse direction. Had some soup just below the top, climbed the tower, took some photos. What a nice day!
Thanks for posting, I may join you sometime soon.

not a bad idea taking the Marion Davis up..
especially in the morning w/ the cold and wind hitting the Wapack on the west side of the mtn...

      how were the trails?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
