St Patricks Day Hike to GREENleaf Hut & Mt Lafayette

Let's hike Old Bridle Path to the Greenleaf Hut and the Greenleaf Trail to the summit of Mt. Lafayette.

If we summit the details are round trip : 8.0 miles, 3,600 feet, 5:50 Book time- we will assume a few extra hours for a slower pace). We do not need to summit to have good views. Trail conditions change daily this time of year, so keep this in mind while you study the trails.

There are excellent views along the Old Bridle Path, and the last mile up the Greenleaf trail is entirely above treeline. A very popular trail,  we will be conservative in our goal for this hike- if conditions are too icy we will turn around.

Winter conditions will be in force. Proper winter hiking clothing and gear is mandatory. Dress in Layers. Snow shoes AND microspikes/crampons.

Have seen a couple of comments now from folks who also hiked in the area on Sunday and mentioned that it really was frostbite conditions... I am glad that we had enough sense to turn around when we did! Thanks again all for a really great hike!

Not much green to be seen above the hut, but still a great way to celebrate St. Pat's day!

Super hike. We learned a few things "CATCRAP" brand defogger works on the googles and if the googles fog up- you are turning around. Crampons are great when needed, but as soon as you don't, switch to microspikes-200% more comfortable. Buddy system worked well getting each other covered for the summit trek- you cant tell if you have bare skin exposed. have that gear easy to get to and a pack roomy enough for quick changes.

Even though I did not make it to the summit, it was a great time. Thanks for waiting for me. I couldn't have gotten past the hut without you all. Thanks Diane.

Have you looked at the forecasted temps for Sunday??? COLD... will the hike still go on no matter what?

    March 15, 2013

    • Diane M.

yes, dress in layers and baselayers. your pack should be roomy enough for you to get into your pack easiely- water freezes at 32 degrees, so camel paks start to have problems -2 ltr wide mouth is better in insulated covering (wrap your extra fleece around them. there is a link to the weather here- remember the summit will be colder.

As much as I would like to go, I want to see how I handle Mt. Mooselauke next Saturday before going after Mt. Lafayette. Have a great time!

Diane, it may be worth making sure that everyone ends up on the correct side of the Parkway in the correct parking lot . The Lafayette place parking on the North Bound side, is the preferable lot as it has a lot more spaces than the South bound side. It is also more convenient for folks heading up from the south.

I added more detail- is it clear? It's the one with restrooms.

Yes... thank you! I also looked at some other websites. The last time I hiked Lafayette we went up Greenleaf and parked at Cannon. I realize this time we are taking a different trail and hence, a different parking location. I think I got it now!

    Hi Diane -
Just want to confirm where we meet for the trailhead. Do we park in the lot for the Cannon tramway or are we meeting in a different spot? I am not so familiar with the trails... thanks!

    March 14, 2013

    • Diane M.

not the tramway. exit northbound- parking lot next to trailhead

Received this report from Kevin T : Hi Diane!
We took the Bridle Path/Greenleaf to the summit and returned the same way as Lafayette was the only objective. 41W for Emma! We wore snowshoes from the parking lot to the summit and back. There were several on the trail in micros and crampons, and they post-holed quite a bit. Above timberline it was ice and barebones, very little snow. IMHO micros, crampons were overkill, but we did not cross the ridge, so may be necessary for a safe traverse. Too bony above timberline for snowshoes, but we just took our time, too lazy to take them off. All that said, things could change a lot between now and Sunday! 8 )

      "COLD"

      March 13, 2013

trail can be anything from ice to "mashed potato" snow. Carrying gear is a little extra weight, but no where as bad as postholing for a mile.

Would love to summit, but making it to hut is cool too. Glad it is Sunday.

I would like to summit. :)

Me too, I have full crampons- 2 pairs. 2 pairs of 1 inch crampons Reading the winter description there could be a few challenges- carpool from ???

      March 12, 2013

    • Sandy

I'm up for borrowing a pair as I only have microspikes. I can carpool from Thetford (off I91) or Lebanon behind EMS.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
