MODERATE/STRENUOUS HIKE- MOUNT OSCEOLA

This group is for hikers aged 50-70+(most of us are 55-65)  who haven't given up on their love of hiking and being in nature despite their age or level of physical conditioning. We hike at a pace 50% slower than the AMC Trailguide book time.Hike ratings:easy, moderate, strenuous, very strenuous. We start as a group,we hike as a group and we end as a group. There are three other hiking Meetup groups if you want a faster pace or more challenging hikes (The New England Hiking Meetup, 4 Seasons Hiking Group, New England Over 40 Hiking Group). The hiking Meetup group,(Fellowship of the Tortoise) does easier, slower paced hikes than this group. If you click on the PAGES button on the home page, there is a Summer Hiking Gear List. Our goal is to stay fit while enjoying the camaraderie of hikers who have similar skills and goals. This is a dog free hiking group.Everybody must join the group and have a picture up to be on a hike.

    Hi all,

I am grateful for you kind thoughts and well wishes.
Tomorrow I will have a surgical repair of my "nasty" ( MD's terminology) fracture. I fractured and displaced the bottom of my fibula in two places, displaced a couple of the smaller bones of the ankle, and did unknown, but pretty bad damage to the tendons that hold the bones of the ankle in place. I will be in a cast for 6 weeks. Not how I want to spend my summer vacation!
To all who helped Mark and Mike transport me down I will be forever grateful. To all who carried the various gear and gave support and encouragement to us all - thank you. I am humbled by the kindness, care and compassion shown to me by all.
There were 4 hikers - Mark, Lise, Clarise and Sharon- who transported me to the hospital and refused to leave me there alone until my daughter arrived. That was far above and beyond the call of duty.
On behalf of my daughters, family and friends I thank you for taking such good care of me.

Damn, we have a good group! Best of luck getting that "nasty" fracture repaired, Ann. I live fairly close by, so if you need me to bring anything to you, just let me know.

Ann, hope your surgery went well.
Best wishes and healing thoughts for a speedy recovery!

    Ann:
I hope you are feeling better. You did someting very smart by taking first the pain medication before we started to carry you down. You can get further advise from Naomi on how to get fast into shape with your injured leg. Naomi is a license and certified physical therapiest.

Yes Janet, everyone got their equipment back. Thanks.

    July 29, 2013

    • Janet

Thanks, Marc. I felt so badly I had to leave, but I'm glad everything worked out.

      July 29, 2013

  • Janet

Did everyone get their stuff back? I had been carrying Ann's poles and Sharon's backpack when I headed down the mt. ahead of the group for help. It turns out my ride had already finished the hike an hour earlier and had to go, so I had to figure out how to get my ride home (she drove me all of the way up from my house) and make sure people got their gear back. Fortunately, the officer from the Sheriff's Dept. heard my dilemma and offered to get your items back to you. I'd just feel better knowing that you did, in fact, get your things.

As I said in my first posting, Ann - I wish you a speedy recovery. What a horrible thing to endure, and Marc - I thank you for being such a great leader. You took great care of us all. Thank God you and Naomi's husband were there to get Ann back down the mt. without further incident.

Take care Ann! Thanks Marc! Great carpooling with Lise! Great meet you all :-)

Hello everyone, Sorry I missed you at the trailhead (got lost, I missed Tripoli Rd, passed the 2nd? Waterville Valley ski area, and ended up at the Tecumseh trailhead, so didn't arrive at Osceola trailhead til 10:20) But it was nice to meet you at the summit :-) I think I also "met" Jim desending the trail when I was on my way up. What a beautiful day, and impressive views from the Summit. I went on over to East Osceola with a couple I met on the way up. It was challenging going up and down the "chimney", no views from the summit, but some on a lookout on the way - but I had to bag that peak :-) It was eerie reaching the completely empty parking lot at the end of the hike after it being so packed in the morning I had to park a ways down the road! Hope to see you at another hike :-)

    July 28, 2013

    • Jim

Gina you did meet me, I think you had on a white head band and probably lied to you when I told you it was only 15 minutes to the summit.

      July 28, 2013

    • Gina

haha! :-) Yep, that was me :-) But you weren't the only one! The next few groups I met (several minutes between each one) said 20 minutes! Then the last group that I didn't ask said It's just beyond that rock.... :-)

  • Marc T.

We brought Ann to Plymouth Hospital where it was confirmed that she in fact did break her ankle (explains her pain level). We waited until her family was able to meet us @ the hospital. We wish Ann a speedy recovery & look forward to hiking with her again once she's healed.

    July 28, 2013

    • Janet

Thanks for the update, Marc. I'm glad Ann made it to the hospital.Ann - I hope you are doing o.k. It must have been so painful. Get well soon :)

SPECIAL THANKS!!!!! I want to personally thank each of the 10 group members that assisted in delivering Ann to safety. It was a collective, team effort & everbody's contribution is greatly appreciated. It's an honor to work with such caring people. You guys Rock!!!

How did our injured hiker do?

I was able to reach 911 and have them send over an ambulance, which they asked me to meet at the entrance to the trail.

When I arrived, I saw someone from the Sheriff's Dept. and explained the situation to him. It turns out my ride had already come down the mt. an hour earlier and had to leave, so I gave the "patient's" hiking poles and Sharon's backpack to the officer, who assured me he would get them to their rightful owners. Louise and I saw the ambulance as we were leaving. I hope everything worked out all right.

P.S. Kudos to our male hikers who were kind enough to help carry her down. That was really touching.

Thanks, Marc, for leading this group. I knew we were in good hands, even though I never did get that bandaid I (never really) needed :)

    July 27, 2013

    • Jim

How did the injury occur, was it serious?

      July 28, 2013

I would like to carpool from concord as well. 8:30 should be fine.

Will you still be meeting at LL bean? I'll be there at 8am.

      July 27, 2013

    • Clarice

      I will be there!

      July 27, 2013

  • Jim

Auto crash in front of my home at 0400 has got me up early. Therefore I will be on the road and at the trail-head much earlier than I had anticipated. If anyone is taking attendance do not wait for me to arrive because I will already be on the mountain. See you on the trail.

    July 27, 2013

  • Janet

Since Mike is no longer coming, can someone else carpool with me? Nashua would be ideal, but that depends on everyone else. Or ll bean in concord.

    July 25, 2013

    • Janet

Hi Louise, Since we're both getting on Route 3 at the Chelmsford/Lowell line, how about we meet at my house? I'm right in between Routes 3 and 495 - easy access. Clarice and Lise could meet us as well. What does everyone think?

      July 26, 2013

    • Janet

Hi Louise, Lise is going to try to get a ride/carpool with people she thinks will be at LL Bean at 8:00. She will call me by 8:00 if she needs us to stop in Concord to have her join us instead. We'll figure out the driving in the a.m. May need to a passenger tomorrow. If she doesn't need us, we can drive straight to the mt., giving us a little more time to get there without rushing. See you at 7:30 or so. I'll need as much time as possible to get ready before you arrive. Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow. Can't wait for the hike!

      July 26, 2013

  • Janet

Weather looks awesome for tomorrow: 10:00 a.m. - 68 degrees and sunny with 63% humidity; 4:00 p.m. - 75 degrees, partly cloudy with 48% humidity.

Lise and Louise - hope to hear from you soon to confirm carpool arrangements and exchange cell. phone numbers.

    July 26, 2013

    • Lise

I have left you a message. Let me know if you got it. I'll be at the LLB carpool area in concord. 800am.

      July 26, 2013

    • Janet

Just got it and spoke with you. Not sure how soon I'll get out the door, but if you need to meet us in Concord, let me know by 8:00 like you said, so I'll know if I need to stop there or not. Sorry I woke you :(

Hi Lise and Louise. Since we'll all be coming from Route 3 at Lowell/Chelmsford, I was wondering if you'd be interested meeting at my house in Chelmsford. I'm right off of Route 3 (in between 3 and 495). Nashua would be my 2d choice, followed by Concord. What do you think? My cell. is: (978) 340-1452. The drive from my house is 1h 51 m/110 miles to Osceola. We can determine what time we want to meet once we finalize our meeting location. Looking forward to the hike tomorrow!
