We hike at a pace 50% slower than the AMC Trailguide book time. Hike ratings: easy,easy/moderate, moderate, advanced moderate,moderate/strenuous, strenuous, very strenuous. On the home page,if you click on the PAGES button there is a hike rating system which explains the wait list.

There are three other hiking Meetup groups if you want a faster pace or more challenging hikes (The New England Hiking Meetup, 4 Seasons Hiking Group, New England Over 40 Hiking Group). The hiking Meetup group, (Fellowship Of The Tortoise) does easier, slower paced hikes than  this group.  Our goal is to stay fit while enjoying the camaraderie of hikers who have similar skills and goals. If you click on the PAGES button on the home page, there is a Summer Hiking Gear List. This is a dog free hiking group. Everybody must join the group and have a picture up to be on a hike.

Trailhead: Take 93 north. Continue to the Franconia Parkway where the trailhead is located on the north side (directly opposite the LaFayette campground). It's just a few miles north of the Flume exit. We'll meet at the Falling Waters & Old Bridle Path Trailhead sign.

This is a VERY STRENUOUS LOOP HIKE. The "wait list" rules will be in effect to insure a safe & enjoyable experience. We will hike the Falling Waters Trail to the summit of Little Haystack (4,780'). We will continue via Franconia Ridge to Mt. Lincoln (5,089') & over to Mt. Lafayette (5,260'). We will descend via the Greenleaf Trail to the AMC Greenleaf Hut & complete the loop to the parking lot via the Old Bridle Path. There are stunning views from all 3 summits as well as the entire length of Franconia Ridge. 8.9 miles round trip, 3,850' elevation gain, AMC book time 6.5 hours; 9-10 hours estimated time for our group. It will be a full day; plan accordingly.

Dave, I am in the same boat. I have been furlough and do not have internet at my house. Didn't get to sign up in time. I do still plan on hiking that day, just without the group.

Just an FYI, I just looked up the summit forecast for Sat. and it is suppose to be 40-45 degrees with clear skies and winds between 5-10 MPH this was for 5600 ft. So should be a great day!! Bring warm clothing!

Unfortunately, I feel that I will be unable to hike this weekend. I have come down with an early season cold/flu (?) and will not be near 100% (probably not even 60%). Hopefully, my pulling out now will allow some one on the wait list to join the group for the hike. Y'all have a great hike!

    Hi everyone,

You're right in that the site is not intended for making hiking arrangements outside the scheduled event. My recommendation is that one of you provide contact information so that the discussion can take place offline.

The reason the hike is limited to a small number is due to the fact it's a holiday weekend & will be crowded. I'm speaking from experience as I've hiked it the past 3 years. It nearly impossible to keep even a moderate number of hikers together under high traffic conditions & make no mistake about it, this can be a dangerous mountain when the weather goes bad & you're exposed on the ridge. I appreciate your understanding in this matter.

If you should decide to do the hike outside the group please be sure you're prepared with adequate clothing, headlamps, food, water etc. Several years ago it was 55 in the parking lot & 24 @ the summit with lots of rime ice. Be safe!

It seems like it will be a good day to do that hike, so I think I will do it anyway on my own and stay out of the way of the Over 50 group. I would start about the same time so if anybody wants to go with me I will supply more info. I trust this is not a misuse of this forum. Marc, let me know if it is.

To address Dave's question below: Yes the hike is being limited to 12 attendees.

I don't understand your new system, is the hike going to be strictly limited to 12 spots and that's all? Because I must be way down the waitlist and I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to join the hike.

I really want to do this hike. Unfortunately, I wasn't checking the upcoming hikes often enough. I'll just have to hope that somebody can't make it.

The Oct 12 Falling Waters Hike sounds awesome but I am going to have to work on the pre-requisites before signing up. Hope you guys have a great time and I hope to see you on the trail one day soon. I will be hiking somewhere in southern NH or northern MA on Oct 12 but haven't decided where. Did Mt Monadnock on Sep 28, perhaps Pack Monadnock on the 12th?
