Adv.Moderate Hike-Black Snout & Mt Shaw-PREREQ Prev Moderate Over50 Hike

This is an Advanced Moderate Hike and as such we will be limiting it to 20 total and require that the hikers have completed one of our Moderate hikes in the past. Everyone will initially be put on the waitlist and will be moved to attending as we review the list. To be fair, people will be added in the order they signup if they are known to be qualified per the above PREREQ and that they answer the 3 questions in the RSVP.

This group is for hikers 50-70+(most of us are 55-65)  who haven't given up on their love of hiking and being in nature despite their age or level of physical conditioning. We hike at a pace 50% slower than the AMC Trailguide book time. Hike ratings: easy,easy/moderate, moderate, advanced moderate,moderate/strenuous, strenuous, very strenuous. Click "Hike Ratings and Wait-Listing" under Pages tab above.

We start as a group,we hike as a group and we end as a group. If you think you may not be able to keep up with the group, do not carpool. Since this hike has 2 subgroups and a distinct meetup for each, please RSVP only to the hike you are comfortable hiking with (faster or slower). We expect people to stay with their group for the entire hike.

There are three other hiking Meetup groups if you want a faster pace or more challenging hikes (The New England Hiking Meetup, 4 Seasons Hiking Group, New England Over 40 Hiking Group). The hiking Meetup group, (Fellowship Of The Tortoise) does easier, slower paced hikes than  this group.  Our goal is to stay fit while enjoying the camaraderie of hikers who have similar skills and goals. If you click on the PAGES button on the home page, there is a Summer Hiking Gear List. This is a dog free hiking group. Everybody must join the group and have a picture up to be on a hike.

Trailhead: I-93 to exit 23, 104 to Meredith, left on US3 Daniel Webster Hwy, Right on Rt 109 Gov John Wentworth Hwy, through Meredith, Center Harbor and Moultonborough town centers (watch speed). After Moultonborough Fire Dept(on left) turn right to continue on Rt 109 to Rt 171 (Mountain Rd). Straight on Rt 171 for 2.2mi past Ossipee Park Rd, past Castle in the Clouds Main Gate and Severance Rd to Shannon Brook parking area on Right, We will park most cars at Shannon Brook and shuttle hikers using a few cars to the Mt Shaw trailhead about 1.6 miles down Rt171 just past Sodom Rd to the Mt Shaw trailhead on the left where there is limited parking for about 4 cars.

The link below should bring up a Google Map of Shannon Brook Trail Parking using Latitude and Longitude.

We will hike the Mt. Shaw trail to the Black Snout Trail and on to the summit of Black Snout South (2,803'), then continue to Mt. Shaw (2,990'). Views of Lake Winnipesaukee from Black Snout and the White Mountains from Mt Shaw. 7 miles round trip, ~2,250' elevation gain from my gps. 7-8 hours estimated time for our group.

Note: There is a modest stream crossing and the last 500' of elevation gain of the Mt Shaw Trail is very steep which is one of the reasons we decided to rate this as an Adv. Moderate hike.
