MODERATE HIKE--> MT. CRAWFORD

This group is for hikers 50-70+(most of us are 55-65)  who haven't given up on their love of hiking and being in nature despite their age or level of physical conditioning. We hike at a pace 50% slower than the AMC Trailguide book time. Hike ratings: easy,easy/moderate, moderate, advanced moderate,moderate/strenuous, strenuous, very strenuous. On the home page,if you click on the PAGES button there is a hike rating system which explains the wait list.

We start as a group,we hike as a group and we end as a group. If you think you may not be able to keep up with the group, do not carpool

There are three other hiking Meetup groups if you want a faster pace or more challenging hikes (The New England Hiking Meetup, 4 Seasons Hiking Group, New England Over 40 Hiking Group). The hiking Meetup group, (Fellowship Of The Tortoise) does easier, slower paced hikes than  this group.  Our goal is to stay fit while enjoying the camaraderie of hikers who have similar skills and goals. If you click on the PAGES button on the home page, there is a Summer Hiking Gear List. This is a dog free hiking group. Everybody must join the group and have a picture up to be on a hike.

Trailhead: Take I-93 North to Exit 35, continue north to Route 302. Make right turn onto 302, continue past AMC Highland Center & The Wiley House. The trailhead is 5.6 miles past the Wiley House on the left hand side. We will be hiking the Davis Path to the summit of Mt. Crawford (3,119'). Extensive views of the Presidential Range from the summit. 5 miles round trip, 2,100' elevation gain, AMC book time 3.35 hours, 5 hours estimated time for our group----Marc-----.

Turned out to be a really nice day for a hike. Great pictures! Thanks Marc and Tom!

Perfect weather day! The summit views were priceless.

Hate to tell you guys that dropped out but we're working on our tans on the summit right now as I type this.

Glad you guys enjoyed yourselves. It was way too humid for me. Humidity is one of my asthma triggers and it was really bad today. I could barely breathe when I walked out my front door, and that was without moving, let alone hiking. I wouldn't have been able to do the hike. I made the right call. I'll be checking for tan lines next time :)

Thanks Marc and Tom for not canceling what turned out to be a great hike.

I too am going to pass on this one today. It's a long drive to hike in rain all day. Will miss you all. Have a safe hike.

    May 10, 2014

  • Janet

Sorry. I can not make it today. The air is way too humid (and hot) for me - asthma triggers. Rain & isolated T storms are still in the forecast for most of the day. Have fun and be safe.

  • Tabor

Forecast still '.'.'.'.' so am going to pass up this one. See you next week.

Sorry guys..I just saw that I'm off the waitlist and on the hike. But can't do it. Made other plans in the meantime. See you next weekend for Mt. Israel.

Hi! Just in from biz trip to NYC and when I left this morning at 4AM, the forecast wasn't bad. Just checked it for Bartlett. High % of rain almost all day :-(. Hate to be a wimp but I am going to pass on the wonderful chance to hike in the cold rain! Tabor, I would love to carpool w/you on another adventure. Stay safe all!

I am canceling my RSVP, also, due to weather and 21-year-old son surprising me with a visit this weekend.

Don't forget to pack shower gear, gators and micro spikes. I picked up a rain poncho so I wouldn't have to deal with a suit. Whip it on, whip it off; done and done. Of course its so long it looks like I have no legs.... See you guys tomorrow! :)

If the hike will be cancelled, when will we be notified?

  • NancyT

Hi Tabor -- if room, I'd like to join your carpool -- coming up from Nashua. What exit is Beans? TY!

    May 9, 2014

    • Tabor

Hi Nancy, Ok, great. I'll look for you at LL Bean at 7:45. Directions: Take Exit 14 off Rt 93 north and drive to the end of the ramp and then proceed straight through the stoplights. About 1000 ft ahead you will see LL Bean on the left. Go left at the second set of lights and drive to the back of the parking lot (to the right of LL Bean.) There's usually more than one hiking group carpooling there -- I'm driving the dark grey 2010 Prius. Let's hope for the sun! Tabor

Weather looks questionable with possibilities of thunderstorms so I will need to pass on tomorrow's hike. Also ditto on Rick S comments about group size restrictions in wilderness area. Enjoy and hope to catch everyone on the trails soon!

    May 9, 2014

  • Rick S

Backing out due to combination of weather forecast, icy/post holing conditions on nearby hike we did yesterday, and wilderness restrictions on Davis Path. Sorry for the late notice. Hope to hike with you soon.

    May 9, 2014

  • Sherry M.

Sorry to do this at the last minute, but something has come up and I will not be able to make the hike.

    May 9, 2014

  • Tabor

I'd like to carpool from LL Bean in Concord. Joanne, if you want to stop there, I'd be glad to drive the rest of the way. (Especially if you think your red exploder might detonate on route.)

    May 8, 2014

    • Joanne B.

Thanks for the offer Tabor, just humor, it won't explode. After 2 years I have replaced most of the major working parts so its almost like new. I will drive up myself since I will more than likely want to head home right after. I still have room for two more if anyone of our MA friends don't want to drive the 2.15 additional hours.

      May 9, 2014

  • Joanne B.

If anyone wants to carpool from Londonderry I will be at the exit 4 park and ride lower lot a little before 7:00AM. I like to get to the trail head 30 minutes early to decompress from the drive (fart around). That leaves about 15 minutes for a bio break. I have one additional rider so I can take 2 more people with gear. I have a red exploder. Let me know.

Sorry to cancel. Family emergency. I hope someone from waiting list can take my spot.

    May 8, 2014

  • Charlie

Will we find out soon who might be moved from the "wait list" to the going list?
    Much appreciated.

    May 8, 2014

  • Michael Moore 603 632 1.

I will also need to bow out this weekend. See you the following.

    May 7, 2014

  • Kathy C.

Sorry, my son decided he could hike with me that day, so I will bow out and let someone else have a chance to hike. You all have fun. See you the next weekend at Mt Israel!

Would love to come. Anybody coming from Portland with whom I could carpool?

    May 7, 2014

  • Denise N.

My apologies for such short notice, something unexpected has come up where I will not be able to attend this hike. Have fun!

There are no stream crossings on this trail...there could be runoff causes wetter spots but no streams.

    May 6, 2014

    • Tabor

      Thanks Diane for the info.

      May 6, 2014

  • Tabor

Does anyone know if there are any stream crossings I need to prepare for on this hike?

    May 6, 2014

  • Charlie

I'm wondering how the waiting list is moving and whether I'll be able to get in on this hike or not?

    May 6, 2014

  • Sandy B.

    Hi,
I love to hike and would love to participate in some of these hiking trips. I don't have a car and live in Portland, ME. Anybody live nearby with whom I can carpool/share expenses?
