VERY STRENUOUS HIKE - MOUNTS MONROE & FRANKLIN

This group is for hikers aged 55-70+ who haven't given up on their love of hiking and being in nature despite their age or level of physical conditioning. We hike at a pace 50% slower than the AMC Trailguide book time.Hike ratings:easy, moderate, strenuous, very strenuous. There are three other hiking Meetup groups if you want a faster pace or more challenging hikes (The New England Hiking Meetup, 4 Seasons Hiking Group, New England Over 40 Hiking Group). The hiking Meetup group (Fellowship of the Tortoise) does easier, slower paced hikes than this group. Our goal is to stay fit while enjoying the camaraderie of hikers who have similar skills and goals. This is a dog free hiking group.

Trailhead: Take I93 north to exit 35,take US3 north, make a right onto US302,meet at the AMC's Highland Center Parking lot at 9 AM and as close as possible to the entrance road.We will drive together and spot cars at the Edmands Path Trailhead then continue on and park at the  Cog Railway base station ($5). We will hike the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to Lake of the Clouds Hut, Mt. Monroe Loop Trail to the summit of Mt. Monroe (5,372'), Crawford Path to summit of Mt. Franklin (5,001'), Edmands Path to spotted cars. (Mount Eisenhower(4,780') can be added if conditions are right, extra 1.4 miles, 350' elevation gain.) From Lake of the Clouds Hut to Edmands Path (2.9 miles) all above treeline with superb views.  8.2 miles, 2,900' elevation gain, AMC booktime 6.5 hours, 10 hours estimated time for our group.   ---Steve ---

Great! If there was a 6th star this event deserved it. Thanks so much for setting this up Steve. Sorry we had to bug out and skip the tailgate party post hike but we got home pretty late. Pete thanks for all the pics...nice shot of the moose!

Yes. Exit the highway at exit 14, go straight across the lights and LLBean will be on your left. Park at the back by the fence.
