ESAY/MODERATE HIKE - LONESOME LAKE

This group is for hikers aged 50-70+ (most of us are 55-65)  who haven't given up on their love of hiking and being in nature despite their age or level of physical conditioning. We hike at a pace 50% slower than the AMC Trailguide book time. Hike ratings: easy, moderate, strenuous, very strenuous. We start as a group,we hike as a group and we end as a group. There are three other hiking Meetup groups if you want a faster pace or more challenging hikes (The New England Hiking Meetup, 4 Seasons Hiking Group, New England Over 40 Hiking Group). The hiking Meetup group, (Fellowship Of The Tortoise) does easier, slower paced hikes than  this group.  Our goal is to stay fit while enjoying the camaraderie of hikers who have similar skills and goals. If you click on the PAGES button on the home page, there is a WINTER HIKING GEAR LIST.NO COTTON CLOTHING IN WINTER! This is a dog free hiking group.Everybody must join the group and have a picture to be on a hike.If you are camera shy, print out a picture of yourself and give it to me at the trailhead. The picture is to show Fish and Game if you get separated from the group.

Trailhead: Take I93 North to Exit 34B,make a left at bottom of ramp,go under I93,make a left onto I93 south.Exit I93 at Lafayette Campground, make left into south end of the hiker parking lot.We will hike the Lonesome Lake Trail to the Lonesome Lake Hut.Lonesome Lake is beautiful in winter. 3.2 miles round trip,1,000' elevation gain, AMC book time 2.0 hours,4 hours estimated time for our group.---Steve---                                                                                                                                       Disclaimer: As a condition of your voluntary participation in this activity you acknowledge and agree to the following: this activity involves inherent risks that can cause property damage, injury, illness, disability, and/or death to participants and/or others; you assume all risk associated with this activity; you are responsible for having the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, clothing, and equipment to safely participate in this activity; you know and will follow the Hiker Responsibility Code described at www.hikesafe.com; the leader(s) of this activity are volunteers; and you release, hold harmless, and indemnify the leader(s) and all members of this group from any and all claims for property damage, injury, illness, disability, and/or death - including those caused by negligence and/or other reasons.

I'm retired except for tax season - it's a tough job but someone's got to do it - you know - annual taxes. Worked 14 days straight except for the blizzard Saturday. Might have Saturday off

If the trails are packed down, Micro-Spikes are probably the best "slip over the hiking boot" gear you can get for the type of hikes this group does.

Obviously for fresh deep snow, you would want snowshoes.

Steve, Many thanks for the link to the Gear List. That's excellent. I'll be joining you gals/guys very soon for one of these hikes. I better start off with a easy/moderate one, although I'm anxious to kick butt on some of the tough ones. I need to get some gear before I join you.

Steve - ditto to Tim's comment!:) I have a pair of stabil-icers.....will that work?

    January 11, 2013

  • Tim C.

Steve, I'm about ready to start joining in on some of these hikes but have a question. What kind of footgear do you recommend to put on the bottom of hiking boots so you don't slip on ICE? The cheap YakTracks with the springs are useless and fall apart.

What are the best add-on products that slip over the bottom of hiking boots?

Can you email me at: tim at askthebuilder dot com ?

Hi All, I DO intend to attend at some point, but I live in Lexington MA, which is a bit of a drive, so I think I will wait for Spring to meet all of you!
