Book 5--Long Book--A Fire Upon the Deep

Because of the holidays, and the fact that we probably don't want to have a meeting on Thanksgiving day--we're going to take this opportunity to do a read a longer book (TBD) with six weeks between the October meeting (at the end of the month) and this meeting in December.

In the meantime, feel free to propose other events!

Really disappointed that I couldn't make it. Sounds like it was a great time. Looking forward to the next one.

I had a great time and I didn't even read the book. It doesn't really matter what we read. This group is good because of the people in it. But I do plan on reading the next one.

Loved the book. Not the best I've ever read, but definitely one that I won't regret. Vinge tells a compelling tale and has an amazing knack for creating worlds and creatures and making it feel meaningful.

I drove by 300 George St., today. Where would be the best place to park tomorrow? On the street or parking garage? Are we supposed to bring beverages, coffee? Sorry, this would be my first meeting...txs

Totally not mandatory! I just felt like bringing brownies because I like brownies!

Ok--due to extremely poor planning on my part (and finals) I won't be at the meeting on Thursday. (Grr...)

Would someone (or someones) volunteer to:
    1) Lead the discussion
    2) Nominate someone to pick the books for next meeting (our next meeting will be at the end of January--so I think the plan was to go for another "long" book)
    3) Somehow send the book suggestions to me (preferably by the weekend) so I can put up the poll?

    Thanks!

I could nominate the next book choices - I have a few ideas for a longer book, more on the 'fantasy' side of sci fi/fantasy......

I would be up for Perdido Street Station, but I can also bring some other suggestions. I will also be bringing some presents (nothing big, so don't get too excited), since I never did get around to reading the book. I did carry it around with me in my backpack for a couple of weeks though.

Ha!!I'm such a dope :-) Either way, my yoga class is in 9th Square every thursday from 6-7:15. I would need about 20 minutes to walk back and quickly change. Maybe I'll be super ambitious next week and be able to skip that day!

Sorry to miss out on this one but I thought it was the week before and will be away for this one!

Even sorrier to have slogged through 600+ pages without the chance to actually enjoy discussing it with all of you.

Does everbody have this book? Anybody still waiting for it to come in via mail? If you still need it contact me.

Has anyone else finished this book? I thought I read a post that a few were having trouble getting through the read, I also found that at first. But, I kept with it and it does get easier to read.
Actually, finished it last week and am 40 pages from finishing reading "WarHammer 40k" Blood Angels:Dues Sanguinius.

It definitely gets easier after you start to understand the world more - but I do think it dragged a bit after. I'm curious to hear everyone else's thoughts on the pacing at the meeting!

    Hello All,
My first post, yea! n haven't met anyone yet, but I just downloaded the Fire Upon the Deep ebook. Look forward to the read and meeting everyone.

So the book isn't long enough, huh? Shall we *also* discuss _Deepness in the Sky_, then? (_Children of the Sky_ has gotten *atrocious* reviews, IIRC, but we could toss that in for fun, too.)

Even if we don't want to discuss _Deepness_ during the actual meeting, I propose a group of us discuss it later, either over dinner or on a second day. It *is* a pretty awesome book.

    • Connie V

To clarify--I've read "A Deepness in the Sky." It's a prequel to "A Fire Upon the Deep," but I believe Fire is set several thousand years later. There is one character in common (people spend a lot of time in cryosleep), but I think otherwise the books are fairly unrelated. As mentioned above, Chlidren of the Sky is also in the same universe, but I really don't know anything about that one, it came out fairly recently (a decade or more after the other two), and didn't get very good reviews. I'm not sure any of us have read Children of the Sky (?), but I think a couple of us have read A Deepness in the Sky. To my knowledge, there are only three books in the universe.

      October 31, 2013

    • Beth

I've read _Deepness_ way more recently than _Fire_. There's a few objects in _Deepness_ that make *way* more sense in the context of _Fire_'s universe, but I think they've mostly got a number of themes in common.

      October 31, 2013

  • Connie V

CLARIFICATION: Just to make sure we're all on the same page--the ONLY book that will actually be discussed at the book club meeting on December 12th will be A Fire Upon the Deep. There are two other books set in the same universe (one is relatively unrelated; I'm not sure about the other)--we're discussing having a separate "post-book club" meeting to discuss either or both of the other two books, but no one has to read more than "A Fire Upon the Deep" for the meeting (to my knowledge, neither of the other two books contain spoilers anyway)!

I thought 600 pages sounded awfully long for this book, so I went hunting for it. My hardcover is only 391 pages, so I'm guessing they increased the page count for the paperback. The type isn't all that small, but then I'm used to reading small type, so my judgement may be off. I also discovered I disliked it enough I never finished it, so since it's not so long after all, I may give it another try. See you then!

    October 26, 2013

    • David M.

I'm the same way. This is one of the few.

      October 26, 2013

    • Connie V

I still find it interesting that you disliked the book so much--I'm interested in discussing it at the book club! I haven't read this one, but as I said read the companion book and absolutely loved it--I thought it was an excellent sci-fi book that did a great job of combining science fiction, characterization, believable aliens, and mood. But, to each his (or her!) own.

      October 26, 2013

  • Corinne

I'm not boasting but the day when 600 pages is long for me is the day I'll stop reading. I just finished a 675 of book in about 2 weeks. Normally I could do it in 1 but I didn't read as much as I normally do.

    1 · October 26, 2013

  • Corinne

Ill probably read them all anyway. The omnibus for Fire is like 1k
