Placitas Dual Training Praxis

  • Apr 19, 2014 · 8:00 AM
  • Placitas Open Space Park

This session will be your first chance to test your Hike N Nav, and your Bike N Nav skills on your own, and without a coach/teacher.  This 4 hour course will be set in a Rogaine format.  Which means each check point has a point value and the goal is to get as many as you can before the 4 hour cut off.  Check points will have different values depending upon the difficulty to find them, and distance to travel.  For those beginners, I have placed several full size Orienteering panels for easy locating.  The balance of the CP's will be my famous orange duct tape with CP marking.  Many of you will already know where some of these CP's are located if you have attended my orienteering classes in the past.  The challenge will be for you to organize a route that maximizes CP's with different point values and distance traveled.  For those parents bringing kids, you can chose to do the beginner route with the full size panels.  If you feel you would like to challenge your children more you can try the orange duct tape CP's.

We start with a pre-training session talk at 7:30am.  Actual session starts at 8am and has a 12 noon cut off.  Bring enough food and water to last the four hours.

The course is set up to hike first then bike.  You may elect to do only the hike, or only the bike.  If you want to be considered as completing the whole course you must  find at least one hike CP and one bike CP.

Mandatory gear for both courses:

Compass, Pack with bladder, cell phone with camera, all per person.  First Aid kit

Mandatory hike gear:

Trail shoes

Mandatory bike gear:

mountain bike, helmet, gloves, sunglasses

This training session happens rain or shine so bring appropriate clothing and layers.

Plan on having fun, being challenged, and enjoying our beautiful NM outdoors !

TEAMS:  Teams of one, two, three, four are permitted

We're meeting past the Silver Mine Trail Head and approximately 1.4 miles from the paved road.

Parking is very limited !  Please car pool whenever you can.  thx

Steve--thanks again for directing yesterday's non-race. I'm emailing you an aerial of the route we took to see if we were on top of CP 33 at some point.

    y'all!

Where is the smack talk? I'll get it started - I'm so good at AR that Steve had to retire the Dual Racer category since I crushed the competition Cochiti Race back in 2010!

    April 18, 2014

  • Steve

Yes. You need to be a member. the dues are $40/yr plus a processing fee. The member fee is good for all of 2014 and covers all our events. You can pay on our website.

Marissa. I have beginner courses with very easy CP's, and I have more difficult CP's. You can finish the easy CP's in less than an hour. After that you can take on the harder CP's and do enough until you're tired of it. Your call

Some points will be plotted. However, the majority will need to be plotted. You may bring your own UTM grid. However, if we supply a map with a special scale we will provide a UTM grid just for that map. Plotting on or off the clock - TBD

    1 · April 2, 2014

  • Jeff H

Will the maps be pre-plotted or will we need a UTM tool to plot points after 8am or during the 7:30 - 8 am pre-race session? If we need a UTM tool, what scale needs to be on there?
    Thanks much,
    Jeff

ok everyone. I just upped the ante for those who want to smoke the entire course. If you clear all the hike and all the bike CP's under the four hour cut off. I will buy dinner for two at a restaurant of your choice in ABQ or SF

  • Angie C.

I would like to take 4 spots.

    March 30, 2014

    • Steve

Go ahead and RSVP +2 for now. I'll save you the fourth

      March 31, 2014

  • Steve

If any of you have taken all my Nav classes in Placitas you will have a leg up on others as the course will use those points. You will still have to strategize and budget your time and distance to get maximum points in the four hour time cut off. Remember you must get at least one hike CP and one bike CP to be considered as completed the full course. Of course, all are welcome to complete only the hike, only the bike, or some of both.
