The Three Sisters Praxis

This is a 4 hour praxis that includes mountain biking, trekking, and orienteering in a rogaine format.   You have the freedom to choose your route and checkpoints (CP).  Each CP has a point value based on its distance and difficulty.  Your objective is to accumulate as many points as possible within the time allowed.  This format rewards strategy and route selection over speed and endurance so be sure to spend a little time on developing your strategy once you have all the points plotted.   Some points may be pre-plotted while others will require a UTM grid (provided).

This event differs slightly from the last praxis.  You will not be taking pictures of the CP locations, rather, all CPs will be geo-verified using an app that captures your current UTM location.  The links to the Apple and Android versions are below.  Be sure to download and install them before the event.  I will explain how these apps will be used during the briefing.

This is my first attempt at designing an event entirely on the computer (no feet-on-the-ground CP verifications) and using smartphone apps to geo-verify CP attainment (no physical CP markers).   As far as I know this has not been attempted before so you might call it a proof-of-concept praxis.  Hopefully it all goes as planned and we'll have found a much simpler way to pull these things together.

Don't worry if you don't have a smartphone.   You can still come out and work on your navigation skills, just don't expect to find a control flag at the CP locations.

Soloist are welcome but you are encouraged to participate as a team.   I will have a short foot course for those that don't have a bike or wish to bring their children.  Only members that have paid their annual dues are allowed to participate.

Another great praxis. The bonus challenges were fun, but I think that lizard was worth more than 5 points! First time MTB in the Volcanoes area - had no idea there were trails out there. Would love to do this again as a night nav (hint hint).

I don't know about pitch black night, I'd probably prefer late evening so there is still some daylight to keep an eye out for critters. There are probably quite a few more snakies in that area than the two rattlers I saw on the course that keep themselves warm and snuggled around those dark lava rocks at night.

Awesome practice in a new location up at the Volcano's yesterday. I had never been out to the area before and Jeff E's course had us all over the Volcanoes. It was tough with the heat but Jeff did a good course design that had us finishing before noon. Thanks, Jeff E, again for hosting!
All you who didn't show up? What's your excuse?!? Congrats to Steve who had the best score!

I do not have a 'team'- there is a 'me' in t-e-a-m, but I'd rather not do it solo if anyone wants to take a chance on a newbie.

If I clear the course - do I get some steak after the praxis or at least a Philly cheesesteak sandwich?

Sounds like fun! But we are planning to be in Durango then. Sorry, I'll miss it!
