Wild herb walk and Wildcrafting basics (CANCELLED)

  • June 23, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This location is tentative and subject to change but will still most likely be in the Sandias.  To save costs on parking we will meet at the elementary school and carpool to one of the picnic areas just up the road. We will leave the parking lot promptly at 9:30 and head up towards Sandia crest.

My intention for this class is to exposure you to a number of different plants and help you recognize the ones that want to get to know you better.  We'll look at different types of plant communities and discuss some permaculture principals and how they apply to plants growing in the wild.

The class will be approximately 2 hours but I would plan for it to go longer just in case.  We will be covering 20+ different plants so bring a notebook and pen and a camera if you want to photograph the plants in their natural setting. If you have a good plant identification book bring it along.  We will talk about different resources for learning how to recognize plants in the area.  Also be prepared for the weather, bring appropriate clothing, water, ..etc..

On the day of the class we will be hiking a short ways into the woods to locate the plants.  Please be on time..which means..at least 10 minutes before the class starts!  Once we leave the parking area you will probably not be able to find us and cell phone reception is unreliable on the mountain.

This past weekend I looked at 3 other trails I've used in the past. Two had already been closed. I thought I got lucky on the third trail, it was still open. I checked out an area where there had been Mullein and Mugwort growing last year. There was not a single plant growing! Without water the only thing that seems to be surviving is the cactus and they don't look that healthy.

I'm going to cancel the meetup for this weekend. I'll keep scouting other areas. I'll get over to check out the Placitas area in the next few weeks. I did talk to the rangers about the Placitas area and they told me all trails had been closed and the road up the backside to Sandia had also been closed. They were monitoring for local traffic only. Hopefully we get some rain next month and I will schedule another date.

Maybe the half that's flooding has a hard time finding empathy for those of us in the drought! Lol... Shaking my head....

I have no clue how any consumption foot print could change the fact that we're in a drought.

This afternoon I tried getting to where I was planning on going for the herb walk. As Charles mentioned the road to the crest is now closed just after Tinkertown. I've got a couple of other good areas I've been to that I will scout out this weekend. One of the challenges is because of the lack of water many plants are not blooming and are struggling just to stay alive. I'll let you know what my scouting turns up this weekend.

Also, Tunnel Springs is great- and closer (in Placitas). http://www.explorenm....

Of these two suggestions, I think the Placitas area trail is more appropriate to a meetup group like this. Also more shade trees, less elevation gain. It seems like areas in the East Mountains are a good option. South of I-40 seems just a little less drought stiken...

I will be with clients all weekend, so am giving up my spot. Hope you find a good spot and that maybe we can do this again after we've had some rain. Since wild plants tend to be opportunistic, anyone for a short notice Wild herb walk?

I am probably showing my ignorance here vis-a-vis official Forest Service statements, but will the Sandias be open at this time? I'm hoping we can still do this!

Dave, Anyone interested... I have an acquaintance who runs an Herbalist School on the east coast. He keeps a FANTASTIC Facebook page: search for "Sevensong Sevensong" and ask to be his "friend" - (as far as I know it's open to anyone). You will be delighted daily by the plant photo ID's and information he posts. (Of course, the climate is so different there... but sometimes he travels to different parts of the country and posts about the plants and animals in those locations.

Yes, I've been following Sevensong for awhile. I also like his posts!

We are going to need a repeat of the wild herb walk-I saw something that looked like mint today and picked some--I was wrong!

    May 31, 2013

    • Dave P.

One thing to check for mints is whether it has a square stem. All mints have square stems, however not all square stems are mints.

"If you only end up with ten or fifteen plants that you know well and trust, then you are indeed blessed. That is all a curandera uses most of the time, that is most of what a good Chinese herbalist needs… and that is the number of plants I imagine traditional healers have mostly relied on for fifty thousand years… You don’t need a whole bunch of different plant medicines… You just need to know the ones you gather, and know them intimately."
    -Michael Moore

There are so many interesting plants in the Sandia's that's it's easy to get caught up in trying to learn a lot of plants. In reality, only knowing a few, up close and personal is all that's important. My goal is to introduce you to plants that will become your personal allies.

      1 · May 19, 2013

I'm working on setting another date, probably in late July. I will have it posted this weekend so people on the waiting list can have another opportunity to go on a walk.

Another carpool post: I can drive if needed but don't like driving my car out of the city much... would be happy to carpool & drive/pitch a few gas dollar$ to whomever happens to be going by the downtown area (or would stop by there & pick me up).

    Thanks!

I know this is a ways out yet, but anyone live in Rio Rancho and want to carpool? I live in the Southern & Unser area.

Does anyone want to make a potlucky picnic lunch out of this? Seems we'll be getting back to the cars right at meal time and we can leave things in the car in coolers.
