DEMOCRACY IN THE WORKPLACE:
TWO SHORT FILMS & DISCUSSION
The OccupyNOLA Solidarity Economy Committee, and the ZigZag Discussion Group will continue discussion of the Solidarity Economy with a session on Worker Cooperatives at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 14 in Seminar Room 4 on the second floor of Monroe Library at Loyola. Two short films will be shown. “Democracy in the Workplace” documents three small democratic worker cooperatives in the San Francisco Bay area, ranging from a bakery with 18 workers to a grocery with 150 workers. A film will also be shown on the large Mondragon Cooperative Federation, which has 84,000 workers, assets of $42 billion, and annual sales of $20 billion. Mondragon is the largest enterprise in the Basque country and the seventh largest in Spain. In addition to its diverse network of producer cooperatives, it operates its own cooperative banks, supermarkets, housing, and health care system. The group will discuss the possibilities for economic democracy in New Orleans. The group is also a NOLA Free School Network class.
