While having a conversation with beer club members Tom and Scott at a recent meetup, the notion of doing something to support a good cause came up. With such an overwhelming response for the toy drive we had last year, Tom thought that maybe we’d be ready to do something else, so he did some research to find out if there were any organizations in NYC that we could help and he came up with a great idea.
Tom spoke to one of the representatives of the Ali Forney Center. AFC is the nation's largest and most comprehensive organization dedicated to homeless LGBTQ youth. The center houses 85 adolescent GBLT youths from the ages of 16 – 23 in different facilities throughout NYC. There is currently a waiting list for all the other adolescents who are homeless and living on the streets of NYC. These adolescents go to the walk-in center that the organization has on a daily basis for food, clothing etc.
We will have a representative of the Center at the meetup to share more information about the work they do. In the meantime, you can find out more about the Ali Forney Center at this website.
Based on his conversation, Tom discovered that the Center has needs for the following items:
• toiletries (travel size)
• school supplies
So, come on out to NYBC for some good friends and good beers and if you’d like to bring a donation of one of the needed items, all the better! Based on past experience, I think we’ll end up with a lot of supplies for the Center.
Many thanks to Tom for finding out about the Center and arranging the meetup with NYBC!
