Catskills Backpack: Giant Ledge, Borroughs Range and Peekamoose/Table

  • April 5, 2013 · 5:15 PM

**THIS IS AN ADVANCED HIKE ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED BACKPACKERS WITH ALL NECESSARY EQUIPMENT.**

We'll be doing a three day, two night backpack in the heart of the Catskills. We'll meet Friday night for a fairly easy 1.5 miles and 750 foot climb to our campsite for the first night, Giant Ledge, which is said to have some of the best views in the Catskills. The next day we'll retrace our steps to the Phoenicia-East Branch trail, which we'll take to its terminus at Woodland Valley. From there we'll take the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide trail over all three summits to the Curtis-Ormsbee trail, and back to the Phoenicia-East Branch trail and our second campsite near the Neversink River, totaling approximately 14 miles and 4000 feet of elevation. For the final day, we will take the Peekamoose-Table trail over both summits, which is approximately 7.5 miles and 2000 feet of elevation.

This is a tough hike loaded with quite a bit of elevation, but includes some of the nicest views in the Catskills. Expect difficult scrambling on sections of the hike and plenty of extended climbs.

Really happy that I survived the first night, which was freezing and so windy, hardly got any sleep. But Sat and Sun was great! Thanks Chris for organizing this. It is one of my favorite local trips.

    April 4, 2013

  • Chris D.

Minhaj and Jeff, are you guys in? If so, when should I expect to see you?

    April 3, 2013

  • Aamar

    Chris,

I am planning to join you at the peekamoose-table TH around 5:15 am.

    April 2, 2013

    • Chris D.

Aamar, we are meeting at 5:15 PM, not the morning.

Chris - think we need snowshoes/crampons? Or will microspikes and gaiters suffice?

    April 3, 2013

    • Chris D.

Personally, I'm not wearing snowshoes but this might be a bad choice. I'll wear spikes and bring snowshoes and crampons to the trailhead for a final decision. Definitely gaiters though.

Chris do you foresee a problem with driving stakes into the ground? My tent is not free-standing. I'm hoping the ground isn't totally frozen.

    April 3, 2013

    • Chris D.

I don't think the ground will be frozen but I'm not sure. The temps have been warm but I think there will still be an abundance of snow in spots. So, we might be camping on snow, which means bring two sleeping pads and a warm sleeping bag.

Does anyone know if the campsites are open platforms or with roof?

    April 2, 2013

    • Chris D.

Campsites are nothing more than a flat piece of land designated for such a purpose, near a water source. No platforms, shelters or roofs.

      April 2, 2013

  • Kevin S.

Chris, are you adding a location?

    April 2, 2013

    • Chris D.

Will send out an email tomorrow with directions.

YES the trip is on, Aamar. I will be at the peekamoose-table trailhead to shuttle at 5:15. What time will you be arriving?

    April 2, 2013

  • Aamar

Chris, I am still interested to come this weekend including one guest. We will be driving from Plainsboro. Please let me know if the trip is still up.

    I'm confused...is this event cancelled?

    April 1, 2013

    • Chris D.

The hike is on. Just wanted to make sure there was some serious melting up there. Didn't want to wear snowshoes on a spring hike.

      April 1, 2013

  • Alex B.

Having unplanned surgery on friday. sorry, will catch the next trip

    March 27, 2013

  • Pat J.

Well I'm only waitlisted on this trip, but if anyone wants to go anyway, do some early spring cold weather backpacking, I'm down!

    March 25, 2013

  • Chris D.

IMPORTANT- I was just in the catskills on saturday and there is still 2-4 feet of snow on the summits. My intent was for this to be an early spring hike with some snow. Unless there is major melting between now and then, I will postpone this trip.

    March 25, 2013

    • Ariella

That would be a bummer, but I understand. I think the forecast is for more snow not a thaw.

      March 25, 2013

  • DorothyD

I won't be able to get there until 7pm or so. I can help with shuttling at that time. Also I can pick people up from the Harriman train station.

    March 19, 2013

  • Chris D.

For those of you interested in this trip, a shuttle is required for the hike. I will be at the peek/table trailhead to shuttle to the start at 5:00 PM, as I want to be on giant ledge for sunset. If this doesn't work for you, you are responsible for arranging a shuttle with another driver and getting to the campsite on your own.

Sounds like a great weekend planned. My attendance is dependent on sharing a ride from NYC area. I will, of course, chip in for gas, tolls and whatnot. Also, I will most likely have to work until 5pm. Sorry for the complexity...

  • jooy

i'll go back on the waitlist for now (still have a possible schedule conflict; will know in a week or so.)
