Escarpment Traverse in Catskills--24 miles

***NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, please post if you can give someone a ride***

TIME: Meeting at the parking lot at 6:00am. Taking as few cars as possible and driving to the north trail head of the trail.

Hike details: We will hike the trail from North to South and follow Blue trail markers from start to finish.  The hike is approx. 24 miles with around 7000' elevation gain.

DIRECTIONS: GPS location of the parking lot: [masked], [masked]

WHAT TO BRING: Map of the area, food, lots of water, layers, headlamp, first aid kit. comfy footwear, hiking poles.

Water source: There is a water source less than quarter mile from the Escarpment / Dutcher Notch intersection, on the Dutcher Notch trail. There is a water spigot by the North/South Campground (about mile 19 of the hike). We are not crossing any roads so there won't be an option to do water/supplies drop off. Bring enough water to avoid getting dehydrated.

There will be no sweep. Hikers should buddy up with similar paced hikers to avoid hiking alone. Cell phone reception is spotty and unreliable. Study the Map link to see where the bailout spots are.

Thanks Natan for the writeup!

Awesomely hard day...the snow made it one of the hardest things i've done ( and the ice bombs!! and the round ice cube ball bearings!!) but also made it so beautiful. Thanks Chris for a great and challenging day...And an extra special thanks to Yuna for the amazing surprise of pizza at the finish -- SO appreciated!!

Thinking about camping as well, and possibly making a Catskills weekend out of it, hiking on Saturday and either doing an easier hike or rock-climbing on Sunday...

Pack microspikes or some form of traction...there will still be snow! If you don't believe me, ask Dorothy.

Sorry to miss this one. I'm hoping to run it in July but I don't think it's safe to go barefoot yet. I can see it from my home in Hudson and it looks white. I need a good long training run for my marathon to qualify for the race. Have a great trip!

    April 9, 2013

  • Justin G.

What is the route for the hike?

    April 8, 2013

  • Kishan

I can drive from the city - I'll leave from Elmhurst and can give 3 people a ride from the Astoria subway stop. I plan on leaving Friday evening and staying at snowed inn. So, first 3 that respond to me you got a ride up! Would like to leave on Saturday but depending on how beat I am.. I might stay the night and leave the next day (and make a wkdn of it).

Guys, I am looking for a ride for two people. Anyone driving from the city or nearby with space for two? We could meet you at a PATH, NJ Transit or Metro North stop if you are outside NYC. We prefer to leave on Friday night and either stay at the snowed inn or camp out. Let me know.

I'm staying at the Snowed Inn in Tannersville friday night. They have plenty of availability for $50 a room. And its less than 10 minutes to the trailhead.
