Beginners Backpack: Sages Ravine AT in CT/MA

  • Apr 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM

This will be a beginners backpack on moderate trails.  The hike will be approx 17 miles over Saturday and Sunday.  Although this is intended for new backpackers, YOU MUST ALREADY BE IN GOOD HIKING SHAPE!

Gear:  We can share group gear as far as water purification, stove and fuel, and tents.  YOU need to provide a sleeping bag of adequate warmth, sleeping pad, a backpack large enough to hold all your gear and some group supply, and all your meals and snacks.

Trip Agenda:

Day 1: Jug End Rd. to Sages Ravine Campsite (9.5 miles).  We climb over Jug End, Mounts Bushnell and Everett, then to Mount Race (superb ridge with extended vistas), all of which provide great views of the surrounding countryside and small towns of the area. We descend to the MA state line and walk thru fabulous Sages Ravine to our campsite, where there are plenty of tentsites within view of the river.

Day 2: Sages Ravine to Salisbury, Rt. 41 (7.4 miles).  We will get an early start and climb Bear Mt. and Lions Head before our final descent to the cars.

Meeting Place:  We'll meet in downtown Salisbury, CT (it's only one street), look for a blue and gray Subaru. Both parking areas have limited space, so please carpool.  No public transportation.

Thanks Chris for organizing this wonderful hike.. If not for this hike, i don't think I would have tried backpacking in near future... You have at least helped one beginner to start backpacking :-) I will keep watching for your posts..

PLEASE READ- Weather looks to be great for the weekend. Mostly sunny, highs in the mid 60s, low in the mid to upper 30s. We will meet in Salisbury, CT at 9 AM. Use the address, 18 Main St. Salisbury, CT. Be sure to bring warm clothing and a warm sleeping bag. You will need 2 lunches, 1 dinner and 1 breakfast. If you want to have hot food, you can use my pot/stove but "just add boiling water" meals would be easier. See you Saturday. Chris

what do you think Chris.. will there be bugs on trail at this time of year?

      April 25, 2013

    • Chris D.

Will probably be a few but shouldn't be bad.

Chris.. How much water should we be carrying? is there a drinking water source in the camp ground? I typically carry .5 gallon for day hikes.. so if i bring .5 gallon for day 1 can we re-fill in camp for day 2?

    April 25, 2013

    • Chris D.

There is a water source at the campsite. So you only need to carry for Saturday and you can refill for Sunday. As far as how much water you need, you'll know better than I. Personally for a hike like this, I'll carry 2 liters.

Anyone need a ride? I'm in New Rochelle, walking distance to the train station! Let me know.

    April 24, 2013

  • Kyle B.

I'm interested in this trip, unfortunately I'm in the same position as Tashi and waiting for my tent. What size are the 2 tents mentioned below? I'm willing to split it up and carry half. Will be able to supply an extra spot for the next trip when I get my tent in. Kyle

    April 23, 2013

    • Chris D.

You don't need it for this trip but you will need a method of water purification (I like the steripen), a backpacking stove and pot, bear bag rope, synthetic clothing (no cotton), plus small odds and ends (small knife, first aid, "the 10 essentials" etc). I'll be happy to go over gear with you this weekend.

      April 24, 2013

    • Chris D.

Oh, and you didn't list pack but I'm assuming you already purchased one.

      April 24, 2013

  • Tashi

    Hello All,
I will not get my tent on time. Please keep me in mind if you have a place to spare. Thank you.
    TY

    • Amit B.

Chris, i won't have a tent and need to share/borrow. Is it available?

      April 23, 2013

    • Chris D.

There are 3 of you and 2 tents unless Aravind or Nicholas need to share. Either way we'll work it out on Saturday.

      April 23, 2013

  • Tashi

I will bring black/green tea for all...

Is it too late to get in on this? I'm an experienced backpacker and could give a ride to 1-2 people.

It may be better to have Chris take you. It takes about 30-60 minutes to get from Manhattan to Grove street. Add in any other transit to get to a Path station, you're probably looking at over an hour on a weekend morning just to get here.

I'm planning on being on the road by 6:30. So, it's up to you.

      April 22, 2013

    • Janicelynn

Ok. I don't mind the early time, but if it will be cramped for a long ride, I may see if Chris can still accommodate me. Thank you!!

      April 22, 2013

  • Amit B.

Hi Chris, Would you please suggest your email. Thanks

Rocky- If its okay. I will like to join this pool. I will share all the associated cost. Thanks.

      April 21, 2013

  • Chris D.

Okay, apparently meetup won't allow me to do that. So everyone will be moved to the not attending list and you can RSVP again if you are still coming.

    April 21, 2013
