Presidential Range Traverse (New Hampshire) - Advanced Marathon Hike

**** THIS IS A BEYOND ADVANCED HIKE AND NOT FOR BEGINNERS ***

WHAT: Presidential Range Traverse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Traverse). 23 miles / 9000 ft elevation. Start at 5AM expecting 12-15 hrs hiking (similar to Devil's Path in difficulty, but much more exposure and variable weather). This will done on nearly the longest day of the year, giving us optimum amount of time to complete the hike.

MEETING PLACE: Appalachia Trailhead - 4:45 AM

HIKING ROUTE: Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Washington, Monroe, Eisenhower, Pierce - ending in Crawford Notch.

The details of the presidential traverse can be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Traverse) or on a number of other sites. It is a spectacular hike, with stunning views like the one above. The hike will hit all of the major peaks in the presidential range and if we're feeling good, we can bag a few of the minor peaks as well.

This is also an exceptionally difficult hike, so it is great if you want a challenge. The weather is incredibly unpredictable - I have hiked these trails in perfect sunshine, and I have seen snow and gale-force winds in August. Much of the hike will be above the treeline. There are a number of bailout points along the way (including the Mt. Washington cog railway) and the AMC huts where we can stop and get food and water.

A shuttle will be required and I hope to set this up Friday night.

Expect to be hiking for a minimum of 12 hours and more likely 15+.

Also, this is a 7 hour drive from NYC, so don't plan on driving up that morning. I recommend staying nearby the night before - we can coordinate this.

Since we may all be hiking at a different pace, try to find someone in the group who hikes at your pace - don't hike alone!

Gear:  GO LIGHT!!  But pack smart. Bring money for snacks and food at the huts along the way and also keep your water weight low (refill at huts). All standard day hiking gear - Sturdy footwear, synthetic clothing (no cotton in the Whites), first aid, headlamp and spare batteries, rain gear, map, and hiking poles (helpful).

YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME LONG DISTANCE (20 miles or more) HIKING EXPERIENCE BEFORE DOING THIS HIKE...THERE WILL BE NO SWEEP, AND LIMITED PHONE RECEPTION.

Feel free to post any questions.

(Much of the content has been plagiarized from Sergey's Devil's Path hike, as they are of similar difficulty)

Ooh, damn, I waited long for this trip ... Chris, Please let me know when you reschedule this trip. I prefer to have it on/after mid-August.

I'm very sorry Aamar. I also was looking forward to my favorite traverse. Try to work something out with Donald and Charlotte. Maybe it can still happen.

I have cancelled one of my meetups before but due to unforeseen circumstances I will not be able to make it this weekend. As much as it pains me, I will have to reschedule it for late July, early august. If you still have hopes of doing it, take down each others email. The only people on the list I believe are doing it are those communicating, Donald, Charlotte, Aamar. Sorry for the late notice but it is completely unexpected.

We may be ironing this out on Friday, but wanted to ask: what is our planned trail upward from the Appalachia trailhead to Madison? Is it via the Valley Way trail? Seems as if the route on the rest of the trip is self explanatory -- via the AT from Madison to Crawford Notch -- but wanted to ask about the beginning of the trip.

All : I plan on doing JQ Adams, Clay, and Franklin. Anyone know if there is a heard path to JQ Adams? Looks like it's trail-less from the Appalachian Mountain CLub White Mountains trail map.

    June 18, 2013

    • Chris D.

JQ Adams is a "rock-whack". It is easily sighted and climbed.

What about Mt. Jackson? Did not see it on your list of Mountains.
Also since thier are only 11 people going I would like to bring a friend. Is this okay?

Plus one, no problem. Yes, of course, Mt. Jackson.

A lot of people have dropped off. So please let me know if you are still coming. I will be leaving midday Friday and can offer rides to 2 people via public transit outside the city. I will also keep an eye on the weather, if the forecast does not cooperate, I will reschedule.

I want to go up to New Hampshire in early July, on the way or on way back from Quebec City. If anyone wants to coordinate something in that time frame, let me know.

Also, there is a lot of bruin/bear up there. Don't bring candy or snacks, don't leave cr8p around. I saw more bear on the mt Washington trail than Franconia notch region.
