May 4: Great Saunter Around Manhattan - 32mi on Foot

  • May 4, 2013 · 7:30 AM

****** Note: This meetup event does not currently have an organizer. Members that plan to attend can use the meetup page to coordinate meeting spots and such ******

WHAT: This is an annual event organized by the Shorewalkers group and attended by hundreds of people each year. It is a 32 mile walk around the Island of Manhattan, starting in South Street Seaport, up the West Side and back down the East. This is expected to take approximately 12 hours, including snack and lunch breaks. Click here for event details.

WHEN/WHERE: May 4th, 7:30AM, at South Street Seaport Heartland Brewery.

WHAT TO BRING: Please read event description on the website carefully. Bring the following:

- food, snacks, water

- comfortable walking shoes, spare socks, BLISTER BLOCK or BANDAIDS. I'd also suggest spare pair of shoes so your feet aren't stuck in the same position for 30+ miles. My feet hurt a lot less at the end of the day after switching from sneakers to flip-flops.

- layer clothing, spare t-shirt

- sunblock / sun hat

Is it an absolute requirement to register on the website? Or can you just join in without registering?

Anybody is welome to walk, as the Shorewalkers DON'T block off any roads or paths especially for this event. You can walk the entire thing, or only a section of it. By officially registering, you are supporting a great organization, and will receive a race number and a completion certificate.

I won't be registering because I'm unemployed right now, but I would still like to join you guys. Are you meeting at a specific spot in South Street Seaport? I hope I'm not the only one without a race number!

I did this two years ago, and had a blast! Not sure if I can make it this year, but please reach out if you have any questions!

Don't bring a heavy pack - it will just make your back hurt at the end of the day. I'd suggest the same things you'd take for a hike - a bit of water, a bit of food, a spare dry shirt. Sunblock/bandaids/blister block might be a good idea.
