Intermediate Backpacking Trip in Harriman: 15-20mi

***Note: Thanks to a trail angel's advice, we're changing the location to avoid parking fees. Also increased the group size - will split into 2 groups for the hike if we end up with too many folks, but will hike/camp in the same area ***

***[masked]-HIKE ***

*** No public transportation. If getting a ride, don't forget to help the driver with gas and tolls: $10 is customary***

WHAT: Intermediate-level backpacking trip. Expect to do 8-10mi each day on hilly terrain (no scrambles) at reasonable pace. Planning to start from Silvermine Parking Area and hike on Menomine (Y) to Ramapo-Dundenberg (R) to Bald Rocks Shelter on Saturday, returning via Long Path Sunday (Note this time of year, many boy scout troops are camping in the park, so if that shelter is taken, we will alter our route and find a quieter spot).

WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, May 18 - Sunday, May 19. Meeting at 9:45AM (starting sharply at 10) at Silvermine Lake Parking Area [masked],[masked]). From GW Bridge, take Palisades Interstate Parkway North to Exit 18 (on left), then third exit from traffic circle onto 7 Lakes Drive, and go 1.6miles, before making a left into the Silvermine Parking Area.

GEAR: You must have your own sleeping pad, sleeping bag, food (lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch), and cookware.

Post a comment if you can share (or looking to share) a tent / stove / water purifier.

Also need regular hiking things - boots, trekking poles, 2-3liters of water, sunblock, layers, rain gear,Northern Harriman Trail Map.

Don't forget to check the weather, as it might rain Sunday.

Just FYI, I will be heading to the Hike from my mom's in Putnam County on Saturday morning, so unfortunately cannot offer a ride there, save from Peekskill train station or the like.

Folks, is anyone bringing a hammock instead of a tent? I'm thinking of shaving off extra pounds from my backpack, and thought of buying and bringing one...

For those still looking for a ride, there is a train from GC to Peekskill arriving at 8:45 am , I could do a pickup there.

I know there is really no way of knowing this but, is there an estimated time that we plan to finish by on Sunday? 3pm? sooner if it starts looking grey?

    May 15, 2013

    • Yelena

My estimate would be around 4pm or earlier. Depends on how long we all sleep in in the morning :)
