Event: Dutchess and Columbia counties in August are beautiful, and there are many farms where you can pick peaches, plums, blueberries, strawberries, early apples, and others.
We'll hit Loveapple Farm in Ghent for peaches and more, Berry Farmstand in Chatham or Samascott Orchards in Kinderhook for blueberries and strawberries. Sure, you can just buy 'em but it's much more fun to pick 'em yourself - and they taste better!
To cool off you can swim at Stuyvesant Falls or grab a chocolate milk at a dairy farm nearby.
Meeting Time/Place: Meeting at 9:30 on Saturday, Aug 3rd at intersection of Broadway and Van Cortland Park South [masked],[masked])
Gear & Cost: No hiking involved, just walking in fields or orchards. Bring comfortable clothes, sunscreen, and cash for what you buy. Most of the farms also have stands where you can get lunch-type food too,.
Transportation: This is a full-day event. We will meet at intersection of Broadway and Van Cortland Park South in the Bronx and drive to final destination. Leader can drive 3 others who meet in Riverdale at the end of the 1 line. Metro North is probably not an option unless someone driving up can grab those coming by train.
I've been up there before, originally inspired by this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/02/dining/02colum.html?_r=1&pagewanted
