Adirondacks! - Marcy Dam Backpacking

It is a busy weekend in the ADKs, so we just have a lean-to (accessible via car) for Friday night. Then we'll backpack into Marcy Dam Saturday morning and camp there Saturday night.

Alternatively, there is privative camping in the south meadows for anyone for people who don't want to backpack. (South Meadows is accessible via car).

-Andre

------------------------------------------------------

The Schedule:

-Friday night: Drive to the Adk Joj (~5hr drive + traffic)
-Saturday: Hike!
-Sunday: Shorter hike, hit the road by early afternoon

Backpacking to Marcy Dam:
We will car camp Friday night, then backpack to Marcy Dam on Saturday.

Free wilderness camping is available at South Meadows if you want to rough it. It is another 2 miles from the trail head.

The Hikes: Algonquin, Marcy and Colden are all popular destinations with multiple approaches depending on your skill and fitness. Check your ADK map for details.

I'll be doing the Trap Dike and a new slide I haven't done before of unknown difficulty. Both are advanced scrambles just short of technical rock climbing and only for experienced climber comfortable with exposure without protection.

Transportation: We need to car pool up. If you can drive, please post where and when you're leaving, and if you're returning early on Sunday. All passengers should chip in at least $20 for gas and tolls.

RSVPing:

- This is for intermediate and advanced hikers only. Expect 10-20 mile hikes. Everyone must be comfortable hiking independently and must be able to read a map (and you can't read a map if you don't have one).

- I will be collecting a non-refundable payment for the lean-tos. Make sure you have a ride before paying.

Food: Participants are responsible for their own food. People often share stoves, but make sure you've arranged that in advance. Group meals TBD.

Required Gear:

-Standard Backpacking gear, incl sleeping pad and sleeping bag suitable for the 20s at night
-Bear canisters are required for backpacking
-Waterproof Boots (trails shoes not suggested)
-Standard hiking gear for cool weather (20s-60s). There shouldn't be snow yet, but an early snow is possible.

Great group, bad weather. It didn't rain, but all the summits were in the clouds both days.

Does anyone have an extra high peaks map I could borrow? If not, do they sell them @ the Loj?

Sweet. I think I'll have time to drop by REI today, so maybe I'll solve this one myself.

Does anyone have an extra bear canister or room in their canister? I thought we'd be at the Loj the whole time and didn't have time to get one. Otherwise, I'll rent one in saratoga on the way up.

I'll have a little extra room in mine too.

Hi, grandma totally brought my camping stuff up. But I forgot to ask her to grab my headlamp for me. Does anyone have a spare one I can barrow? If not I will grab a flashlight or something tonight.

Grab a flashlight. I have one you can use, but bring a second light source. Also, where are you sleeping friday night?

I thought we were doing lean to's and tents. I don't have my tent because I thought we were sharing.

I just booked a car. The total was 64 out of newark vs. over 200from LGA or JFK. By going there, I also don't have to pay the various tolls to get back to queens. I can pick up people in Harrison NJ on Friday and head up.

How much would you need for chipping in? Also probably a mute point now but did you see my post, two down?

The car was very cheap out of newark. just gas/tolls really. The car was 20/day

I live in New Haven and am (tentatively) planning on leaving Friday @ 3pm. I could pick people up in New Haven if they take the North Line. IDK how easy this will be for people, but I've done this before, and then we can hop on 91N directly from New Haven. I have my own car, and we can stop for quick road food. There will be tolls, so maybe bring $3/person for them? IDK the exact rates, though.

Does anyone leaving from NYC have space in their car? Otherwise, I can get a rental.

Can anyone volunteer to grab some sites at the south meadows Friday night? Ideally the non-backpacker who arrives first would do this.

Update: There was a campsite open Friday night so I booked it. That gives us lodging for 12 people (6 in the lean-to, 6 in tents). For Saturday night there is only privative camping at south meadows or backpacking.

I have a tent that comfortably sleeps 5 people, so I have room for 4 more people if anyone needs a spot.

I'm in the West Village. But it sounds like this trip is now a backpacking trip and can no longer accommodate the initial size of people who RSVPed, so I am no longer going :(

There is primative camping at south meadows for anyone who doesnt want to backpack.
