Cold Spring Loop - Easy and Intermediate

Its hiking season so lets take a hike !!

Basics:
This an Easy/Intermediate hike.
Terrain: Hills, some steep
Elevation Gain: 1200ft or more
Distance: up to 8 miles
Hiking Pace: Moderate pace over all

Please remember that even easy hikes are true hikes: you must be able to sustain several hours of physical exertion and have proper gear.

Hike Route:
We'll do a loop out of Cold Spring, up Mt Taurus, and on the under cliff trail. Great views of the Hudson and Hudson valley abound.

Public Transportation Meeting Location & Return Time:
Meet at 8:30 am sharp at the information booth at the center of Grand Central Station. Look for other hikers.

Take the 8:43 train to Cold Spring, arriving around 9:59am. We will return from Cold Spring in the evening--trains run hourly, and what time we return will depend on how fast we hike, and whether people choose to stick around for dinner or a drink after the hike.

Car Drivers and Riders
People who are coming by car and are willing to give rides, please write in your RSVP from where and when you are leaving. If you'd like a ride, please contact a driver (and bring $5 to chip in for gas and tolls.)

If you are driving to this meetup, you should park at Cold Spring train station and meet the group at 9:59am.

Gear:
- Standard day-hiking gear - it's getting cool out, so a windbreak and winter hat are suggested
- 2 liters of water = 2 quarts. 3 liters minimum is suggested.
- Lunch and Snacks
- Poncho or rain gear just in case
- Trail map (and the ability to read it)

Me and my friends are going for another hike this Sunday on Breakneck, which is about 10 miles and accessible by train. I can send the details to who ever is interested.

PS I would love if you did a repeat of this one day, or something of a similar length and degree of difficulty. Most of your hikes are of a bit more length or level of difficulty than I can manage, but an Easy/Interm. hike of say 6-10 miles is perfect for me! ;-)

It was wonderful to meet everyone on Saturday! I think I found my new Sweeper calling :) As shared, here is a link to the Doggie Halloween parade in Ft. Greene. Let me know if you would like to join me! Fort Greene's Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest
Saturday 10/26 - Fort Greene Park, Noon
This event is good as it sounds: Dogs wear Halloween costumes and sometimes they even dress up their humans and/or babies in matching costumes.

    Hi all,

    I am organizing this hike.
Everyone who is coming by car, please send me your phone number on Friday evening so I can call you once you are there at the Cold Spring station.

This is going to be a SLOW hike to enjoy the fall colors and taking pictures. Please update your rsvp accordingly.

I will send out my cell phone number Friday evening to the people who have rsvp'd yes.

I'm driving from CT and will be arriving at the Cold Spring train station at 10 a.m. Who is the organizer of this hike? Is there a contact number I can call if I'm running late?

Think I'll just swing up from Middle Village, Queens and see what is what. Maybe ask if a friend is interested to drive up with. With so many people, shouldn't need a map, I hope.

Hi. I've just seen this hike, and my partner and I are keen. We don't know where to buy trail maps here in NY though - can anyone point us in the right direction? Thanks in advance

    October 17, 2013

    • Peter

I know they sell trail maps at the Eastern Mountain Sports store in SoHo, & I would guess trail maps are also sold in REI or any other major outdoor/hiking store. I think the trail map you'd want to buy is New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Map #102, but you might want to double-check that.

Thanks Peter, that's really helpful. We'll try and wrangle us a map, and hopefully will see you there =)
