Breakneck to S. Beacon Fire Tower Hike, 9.x miles

Update: Due to a forecast of snow (woohoo!) the hike will start and end at the Washburn trail/Little stony point trail head

Public Transit: Get off at the Cold Spring station. I'll be on the train and will meet people at the platform. It is a short road walk to the trail head.

Drivers: The train station parking lot is probably the best place to park. We'll be getting off the train on the opposite side of the station, so drivers should arrive early and cross over.

The snow will probably slow a us a little, so instead of 4pm we'll probably be back around 5pm (after dark, so bring headlamps!)

The Basics:

This is not a hike for beginners.  We'll be moving at a brisk pace with no sweep.

Hiking Level: Intermediate hike

Terrain: Steep scrambling and several hills

Elevation Gain: 3k+ feet

Distance: ~9 miles

Hiking Pace: No sweeper or set group pace;

About the Hike:
From parking lot, we will scramble up on the Breakneck Ridge trail (white) with a nice view of the Hudson River & the Storm King Mountain. Then hike to Sunset Point and continue north to the newly South Beacon Fire Tower then return to the parking lot.

Link to the trailhead/trailend parking lot: parking lot (that's[masked], [masked] in case the link doesn't work. Just go to Google maps and enter the coordinates). This is the larger parking lot about 0.2mi north of the tunnel.

Public Transportation Meeting Location & Return Time:
Metro North Railroad: Take the 7:43am train from Grand Central to the Breakneck Ridge stop, arriving at 9:05am. The finish time is heavily based on the group's pace -- "likely" be 4pm, plus/minus one hour. At the end of the day, you may hop on the train at the Breakneck Ridge stop (check the times) or at Cold Spring station (a 2.5-mile walk/ hike with trains running hourly). Some willing drivers might be able to shuttle you to the Cold Spring station.

Car Drivers and Riders:
People who are coming by car and are willing to give rides, please write in your RSVP from where and when you are leaving. If you'd like a ride, please contact a driver (and bring $5 to chip in for gas and tolls.)

Day Hiking Gear:
Standard gear: hiking boots, non-cotton clothes, one more warm layers then you expect to need, warm hat, etc

2 liters of water minimum

Lunch, snacks and extra food.

Check the forecast for Cold Spring, New York.

Only a 60%+ chance of rain will cancel. If there's ice and snow we'll bypass the scrambles.

Andre was a great guide, took us to some fantastic view spots. Gave great advice on winter hiking. The group was enthusiastic and a pleasure to speak with along the trail.

Hiking in a snow storm is always great! We did only about 8 miles due to slow going and icy conditions.

Would abs. love to go, but the weather forecast predicts icy road conditions later in the day. Good luck, and I hope that this hike is posted again in the future!

I may be tired from working all night, and could use some volunteers to pull me (difficult parts only) on a sled. Thanks in advance for your generosity and kindness.

Love potentially hiking in the snow, but unfortunately scrambling is beyond my capabilities, in any weather....

We won't be scrambling. When we plan to stay together as a group, a sweep is some who volunteers to be the last person and make sure no one gets left behind.

ok tx... i'm thinking maybe I shouldn't try this hike...normally I've only hiked 6 miles or so on flat/slightly hilly terrain and wouldn't want to hold up the group or get left behind because there's no sweep..and without my having personal experience with how fast this group of hikers really moves...

The forecast is calling for a significant snow storm this weekend, possibly inches to a foot of snow on Saturday. As long as the trains are running, the hike is on, but if it is snowy we'll hike out of Cold Spring and do less scrambling.
