Breakneck to S. Beacon Fire Tower Hike, 9.x miles

Drivers, the train arrives at the breakneck station at 9:03 so please plan on arriving just before that so we can meet you in the parking lot and start hiking immediately.

The Basics:

This is not a hike for beginners.  We'll be moving at a brisk pace with no sweep.

Hiking Level: Intermediate hike

Terrain: Steep scrambling and several hills

Elevation Gain: 3k+ feet

Distance: ~9 miles

Hiking Pace: No sweeper or set group pace

About the Hike:
From parking lot, we will scramble up on the Breakneck Ridge trail (white) with a nice view of the Hudson River & the Storm King Mountain. Then hike to Sunset Point and continue north to the newly South Beacon Fire Tower then return to the parking lot.

Link to the trailhead/trailend parking lot: parking lot (that's[masked], [masked] in case the link doesn't work. Just go to Google maps and enter the coordinates). This is the larger parking lot about 0.2mi north of the tunnel.

Public Transportation Meeting Location & Return Time:
Metro North Railroad: Take the 7:43am train from Grand Central to the Breakneck Ridge stop, arriving at 9:05am. The finish time is heavily based on the group's pace -- "likely" be 4pm, plus/minus one hour. At the end of the day, you may hop on the train at the Breakneck Ridge stop (check the times) or at Cold Spring station (a 2.5-mile walk/ hike with trains running hourly). Some willing drivers might be able to shuttle you to the Cold Spring station.

Car Drivers and Riders:
People who are coming by car and are willing to give rides, please write in your RSVP from where and when you are leaving. If you'd like a ride, please contact a driver (and bring $5 to chip in for gas and tolls.)

Great hiking with everyone. Next time we will have to go a little quicker and avoid the gentle stroll we had. Jk. Hope to see you all again.

Thanks for leading the hike, Chris. I'm sorry I had to bail early.

The Cold Spring area received maybe an inch or so of snow today. I recommend bringing traction of some sort (microspikes, hillsounds, etc.) but there is probably not enough snow to need them. Also, please arrive on time. My cell phone is[masked] if you have any questions. See you all tomorrow.

What are the conditions out there at the moment? I have tiny microspikes/poles, but no crampons and wonder if that's enough for BN.

I'm expecting little to no snow and very little ice. Whatever traction you have should be fine. At this time I don't think anything will be necessary.
