Breakneck to S. Beacon Fire Tower Hike, 9.x miles

  • Mar 8, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Rob's is riding herd now.

-Andre

--------------------------

The Basics:

This is not a hike for beginners.  We'll be moving at a brisk pace with no sweep.

Hiking Level: Intermediate hike

Terrain: Steep scrambling and several hills

Elevation Gain: 3k+ feet

Distance: ~9 miles

Hiking Pace: No sweeper or set group pace

Depending on trail condition we might bypass the scrambles. Bring micro-spikes! Snowshoes might be desirable too.

About the Hike:
From parking lot, we will scramble up on the Breakneck Ridge trail (white) with a nice view of the Hudson River & the Storm King Mountain. Then hike to Sunset Point and continue north to the newly South Beacon Fire Tower then return to the parking lot.

Link to the trailhead/trailend parking lot: parking lot (that's[masked], [masked] in case the link doesn't work. Just go to Google maps and enter the coordinates). This is the larger parking lot about 0.2mi north of the tunnel.

Public Transportation Meeting Location & Return Time:
Metro North Railroad: Take the 7:43am train from Grand Central to the Breakneck Ridge stop, arriving at 9:05am. The finish time is heavily based on the group's pace -- "likely" be 4pm, plus/minus one hour. At the end of the day, you may hop on the train at the Breakneck Ridge stop (check the times) or at Cold Spring station (a 2.5-mile walk/ hike with trains running hourly). Some willing drivers might be able to shuttle you to the Cold Spring station.

Drivers, please plan on arriving just before the train so we can meet you in the parking lot and start hiking immediately.

Car Drivers and Riders:
People who are coming by car and are willing to give rides, please write in your RSVP from where and when you are leaving. If you'd like a ride, please contact a driver (and bring $5 to chip in for gas and tolls.)

Day Hiking Gear:
Standard winter gear: hiking boots, non-cotton clothes,  one more warm layers then you expect to need, warm hat/gloves, big puffy jacket for when we stop for lunch

2 liters of water/hot drink minimum

Lunch, snacks and extra food.

Haha! Slid down a few on our trail too. They so should make snow sliding a meetup event!!

@Jessica, you are most welcome. @Walt, wait till we get a winter with some "flow" ice. But for now, there's another kind of snow sliding coming up:http://www.meetup.com...

It was great day in the snow on Breakneck with some old friends and new! As I recall, I managed to shake off most of the group by the time we passed the red trail, but the psychiatrist, the financial services guy, and the lighting designer just would not give up! I know there is a joke in there someplace! Seriously, a pleasure meeting you all.

I have been home all week with some flu/cold or creeping crud. I really wanted to go with you guys, especially with Rob leading. However I guess it's my body telling me other wise. Have fun I will miss everyone but I will be back!!!

Feel better, Jim! And thanks for the shout.

Rob thanks for the equipment left on the car. Thanks for organizing the meet up

I was thinking of doing a bit more. I wont be hiking with the group, but maybe will see you around that area.

    March 7, 2014

    • Tonya

Ha! Sounds awesome but looks like I am going a litte later than you are!

      March 7, 2014

    • Rob

Well you are fast, so come later and you can catch us! (And carry my pack from there.)

      March 7, 2014

  • Michelle J

Hey Rob, let's talk tomorrow post-hike. I'm leading a 10 miler on Taurus so maybe dinner in Cold Spring if we finish around the same time?

Willies? Or Texas BBQ (on route 9.)? Check it out on Yelp if you haven't tried their brisket.

  • JJ

hi everyone, this would be my 2nd time around with this group and just wanted to know if anyone would be interested in leaving early with me since id like to offer rides if needed. Im right by the GWB in NJ and close enough to the PATH train in hoboken. I've got some prior engagements but would like to hit the trail tomorrow! Thanks!

    March 7, 2014

  • Andre

Rob's riding herd now. Have a good hike!

    March 6, 2014

    • Rob

Ah, it's official, I'm host. And my first official act is to ask everyone who is not coming to take your "expletive deleted" name off the list so we don't stand around waiting for you for an hour (or even two minutes.)

      2 · March 7, 2014

  • Andre

If anyone wants to host this one, let me know. It turns out I'll be out of town on 8th/9th so I posted another breakneck hike for the 1st, but there's no reason this event can't go forward too.

    • Rob

@ Vandana (Wendy)...Meetup doesn't have leaders...we have "hosts." Leaders show the way and try to figure what to do if things go wrong. Hosts (like me) get to say things like "Dahling, I'm so happy you could come, that outfit is amazing, I love the colors!!!."

  • Hyman

    Is this hike going ahead?

    March 6, 2014

    • Rob

Hyman, at this point I plan to be there. I've cross-posted on another hiking group I run, so even if everyone here decides to bail, myabe some from that other group will show up.

      March 6, 2014

    • Rob

Not sure why Andre hasn't elevated me to "official" host...maybe he's MIA, .maybe he's trying to tell you all something, or maybe it's because he's finally grown weary of my inappropriate humor. No matter, those here who show up and want to hike with me, can, unless you are really poorly equipped.

Trekking poles aren't a necessity, but spikes are and I must have left mine in VT, so I don't think I'll be able to go.

    March 5, 2014

  • Jessica G.

Now that Rob is hosting, is anyone besides me taking Metro North that wants to meet up at Grand Central?

    March 5, 2014

  • Tonya

I will likely hike even if no leader as long as Heather agrees...

    Next time.

I'm wondering the same as Jessica. This is my first time I signed up for a hike with this meetup group. At what point will the hike be cancelled if nobody is able to lead it?

    March 2, 2014

  • Jessica G.

    Hi . Is anyone hosting?

    March 1, 2014

  • Andre

Just a reminder that everyone needs to be recognizable profile picture - If you don't have one, please update your picture.
