Catskills Waterfall Rappelling - Platterkill Creek

  • Aug 16, 2014 · 9:30 AM

I had a great time scouting this in July and can't wait to get back with there with ropes!

-Andre

----------------------------

We'll descend Platterkill Creek, entering via the Devil's Hole. There are couple of good sized waterfalls (50+') and a couple of smaller ones that are all worth rappelling.

Meetup Location: McDonald's right off the exit. 350 New York 212, Saugerties, NY 12477 at 9:30am. We'll drive to the trail head and drop a car on the way.

Car Pooling: Drivers, please offer rides if you are willing. Passengers, please contribute to tolls and gas.

Gear: I'm intentionally not including a gear list - you should know what to bring.

This is only for experienced rappellers - rappelling once or twice is not "experienced". This is not a guided trip. This is an inherently dangerous activity with hazards that  include falling rocks, hiking/scrambling over slippery rock and boulders, rappelling itself, and the general dangers of hiking.

If you're unsure about your experience, email me (Andre) and we'll discuss.

Bottom-up Option: This is also a great river hike from the bottom up. There's no official trail, but there is a good herd path at least half way up to several waterfalls and swimming holes. If you're interested in organizing that, email me (Andre) to discuss it. Do not RSVP here.

I'm packing for my next trip and I realized I'm missing two large orange dry bags and a pelican hard camera case. Did they end up anyone's car by any chance?

Thanks Andre - both for the awesome day overall and your patience as I blew off my rappelling cobwebs! We made it out of the gorge with a couple challenges and back to the car just after 7PM.

Did you go back up devil's kitchen?

We tried. When we got to that section where we did the 2nd rappel, I saw 3 options to go up - the way we came down, the narrow V, or the ledges to the left. Tried to go up the V, but I was concerned only one of us might get up. Eliminated the ledges on the left as too slippery and too far to fall. In hindsight, the way we came down was probably the best choice for going up, but by that point we decided time was an issue, so we just went up the other side, a different way than last time. Mind you, that was still a bit gnarly.

Just curious for your raps, are you doing double stranded or single? Also are you using an established bolted anchor or making your own?

Two spots if anyone needs a ride. I'm driving up Saturday morning and returning Sunday. Driving through Queens, Manhattan and then GWB. Send a message if interested.

I pushed that back to 9:30am for a little extra sleep.

A couple of people asked about additional spots - No, I won't be adding spots. About 6-8 people is the ideal number and I extended that limit for some regular members and other event hosts, but if they drop out their spots will be closed to bring the group size back down.
