NE 115 Backpack: Ten of Fourteen 4000 footers in Maine

  • June 29, 2012 · 12:00 PM

Attention aspiring NE 115 hikers! This will knock most of the Maine peaks off your list!

We'll backpack approximately 60 miles over ten major peaks with approximately 14,000 feet of elevation gain.

Peak List:
Saddleback Mountain
Saddleback, The Horn
Mount Abraham
Spaulding Mountain
Sugarloaf Mountain
Mount Reddington (bushwhack)
Crocker Mountain
South Crocker Mountain
Bigelow Mountain, West Peak
Bigelow Mountain, Avery Peak

This trip is grueling to say the least. Expect long days up to 15 miles and 4000- 5000 feet of elevation gain over 4.5-5 days. Experienced backpackers only with all necessary equipment. A shake down backpack before this trip will be required.

There 6 of us in total. Yelena is taking Fenton and Eric. I'll pick up Yuna and Eva. I hope to be in the area by 5 PM Friday night and hike just a few miles to the first shelter. This means we will leave first thing Friday morning. You should have lots of food, 4 dinners, 5 lunches and 5 breakfasts; plus extra. The forecast as of now is for temps with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the 50s. Don't forget warm layers and rain/wind gear. Many of these mts can produce weather similar to

Well... not too sure about the next 2 wkend, anything coming up ? I'm doing dragonboat practice on Sats., so kinda tie down but can be flexible. As for stuff since we last hiked... I've done 2wks of backcountry out in Patagonia in March including a 4nite through hike. A wk long mountaineering training up on Rainier in Apr. And I'm still in pretty decent shape, so I shouldnt be a hindrance. And I'm doing a Montauk-Queens 120+ bike ride for Saturday... So I should be ok.

I posted a catskills backpack May 18-20. If you plan to attend the ME backpack in July, I ask you attend this trip or one to be determined on June 9-10. Thanks.

The other 4 peaks are over a hundred miles away. 3 in Baxter state park and the other is right on the border with NH in the whites. I have the Baxter peaks listed as a car camping trip right after the backpack if you're interested.

Asking a very stupidly ambitious question... What's the chance to pick up the other 4 ? Is it an issue of them being spread out ? ... I don't even know why I'm asking this... This is a Chris D. trip... No, DUH, Fenton !!!
