Sunday: Fit Beginner/Intermediate Schunemunk - 8-10 Miles

  • Nov 18, 2012 · 9:15 AM

*** If getting a ride, don't forget to help the driver with gas and tolls: $5-10 is customary***

Basics: This will be a Fit Beginners / Intermediate hike of 8-10 miles. The pace will be brisk (about 1.5-2 mi/hour). There is a small section of rock scrambling and rolling hills/uneven terrains are involved. Also note that it is a mostly-exposed trail so it will be windy.

We will gather at Black Rock Fish & Game Club parking area off of Rte 32N [masked],[masked]), the drive to the trail head together.

Note that due to the season, there are tons of leaves on the ground and the terrain could have some icy spots. If you have hiking poles, please bring them along.

• Hike Length:
8-10 miles, ~6 hours, looping trails
Difficulty: Fit Beginners/Intermediate
Pace: 1.5-2 mph

Getting a Spot: RSVP with Yes or Maybe, depending on your level of certainty. Please write in your RSVP if you are driving and can offer rides. And update your RSVP if you can't make it.

Transportation: Car Only

From New York State (north) – Take I-87N until exit 16, then make a right onto Rte 32N for about 7 miles. You should see a dirt parking area on your left, with a Black Rock Fish&Game Club sign. We will meet there and drive about 5 minutes to the trail head.

Gear:

-- Trekking poles!! (STRONGLY suggested -- slippery leaves and potential ice on the ground)
--
Hat/ gloves, warm layers/jacket.

-- Standard day-hiking gear
-- 2 liters of water at minimum
-- Lunch and Snacks
-- Hiking map of Schunemunk Area

-- Headlamp if you have one

A more detailed description of proper day hiking equipment can be found here.

All the maps we use are available through the H&N Amazon.com store. The West Hudson map set covers this hike.

Weather Forecast:
50F, Dress Appropriately

After the Hike:
-- Upload your pictures and review the hike!
-- Remember to check yourself for ticks. Deer Ticks are barely the size of a newsprint period and often carry
Lyme Disease, so check yourself carefully.

Meeting Location & Return Time:
Location: Black Forest Fish & Game Club parking.

Time: 9:15 am, planning to finish around 4pm depends on the group composition.

This was my first meet up experience. We had great conditions : very cool people, and perfect weather. I would do it every Sunday. Thanks Yelena for organizing it.
