Catskills Bushwhacks: Balsam Lake, Graham and Doubletop

  • December 8, 2012 · 9:00 AM

This event is for advanced hikers only. Moderate pace on challenging terrain.

For peakbaggers looking for these three mountains, we'll start from Beaver Kill Road in Hardenburgh, NY. From the parking area near Balsam Lake we will take the Dry Brook Bridge Trail to the Balsam Lake Mtn Trail passed the fire tower on Balsam Lake Mountain. We'll briefly reconnect with the Dry Brook Bridge Trail before taking the unmarked woods road to the summit of Graham with partial views from the ruins of the old communication tower on top of Graham. Then the true Bushwhack from Graham to Doubletop begins. Once signing the canister on Doubletop we'll descend in a southwesterly direction to Tunnis Pond and take the Neversink-Hardenburgh Trail back to the beginning.

Mileage: 11-13 miles depending on exact route
Elevation: approx. 3400 feet elevation gain
Expect 8-9 hours of hiking.

Gear List:
Traction Aids (microspikes)
Trail Map - Catskill #142
Hiking poles (recommended)
Sturdy footwear
Wicking clothing - absolutely no cotton
Headlamp + spare batteries
Food & water

Expecting little to no snow. There might be some higher elevation snow Friday night but rain in the valleys. Bring microspikes to the trailhead and make the decision then.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
