New Meetup: New Years Trip to the Presidential Range - Advanced Hike - Drivers Wanted

From: Group A.
Sent on: Thursday, November 25, 2010 12:20 PM
Announcing a new Meetup for Hiking & Nature Meetup!

What: New Years Trip to the Presidential Range - Advanced Hike - Drivers Wanted

When: Thursday, December 30,[masked]:00 PM

Price: $50.00 per person

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Contact Andre with any questions about this meetup

Note the special RSVP Procedure

The Plan:
We'll leave the city Thursday around 3 or 4pm (it is a 6 or 7 hr drive) and return Sunday by about 10pm.

We'll stay at a hotel with three or four people per room.

The Hikes:
The Presidential Range includes several great peaks above 5000' ft. Winter weather makes them extremely challenging as there are regularly hurricane force winds and wind chills of -50f above the tree line. Scores of climbers have died or needed rescue because of the harsh conditions.

We'll probably be splitting up in to different groups to do a range of hikes. Some people may do Mt. Washington (with crampons), and others will be heading up different peaks. All hikes will be 8 miles or more, will 4000' ft or more of elevation gain.

The short days, winter conditions, and heavy gear required make these hikes much more difficult than the mileage and elevation suggest!

Getting a Spot:
1) Add yourself to the waiting list
2) Send the event organizer (Andre) an email so he can confirm you have the gear and experience for this trip, and confirm transportation & lodging
3) Once you are added to the yes list, make your deposit

This may seem heavy handed, but this meetup never leaves slower hikers behind or lets someone turn back alone. Consequently, we do have to screen participates a little.

An important note about advanced winter hikes: This trip involves dangerous winter conditions on top of physically challenging hikes. You'll be shown a page of questions after you RSVP. You must give specifics about your previous hiking experience. Be honest about your ability. (Andre assumes those who don't answer are too inexperienced for the trip and dangerously bad at following directions as well.)

Full winter mountaineering gear suitable for single digit temperatures

You must have extensively tested your gear to complete hike safely.

You can rent mountaineering boots, snowshoes, crampons, and ice axes as needed.

Expect temperatures around 0f and 60+ mile per hour winds.

Estimated Cost:
*A non-refundable deposit of $50 for lodging is required to secure a spot.*

$100ish for three nights of lodging
$20 to $40 for boots, snowshoes, crampon rental, ice ax rentals
Transportation will be at least $20 for gas, but we might have to rent a car for four days
Drivers, we will cover all gas and tolls for the trip!
