SLOW U: Chasing Chiles

Join Slow Food NYC and chef and author Kurt Michael Friese for an evening of all things chile at Jimmy’s No. 43. Chef Friese will talk about his new book, Chasing Chiles: Hot Spots Along the Pepper Trail (Chelsea Green, March 2011), co-authored with fellow gastronaut Gary Paul Nabhan (internationally-celebrated nature writer, seed saver, conservation biologist and sustainable agriculture activist), while you dine on chili served up by Jimmy’s No 43.

In Chasing Chiles, Chef Friese and his fellow gastronauts recount their year-long adventure across North America – from New Mexico, to Louisiana, to the Yucatan – in hot pursuit of heirloom chile varieties, chile cuisine and its long cultural traditions. From speaking with farmers, visiting the fields and eating in local diners across the continent, they explore how climate change is impacting not just this iconic spice and vegetable, but our producers, sustainable agriculture, and ultimately, what we eat.
The cost of beverages is not included in the ticket price. Jimmy will offer specially selected beers from his array of a dozen brews on draught and more than 20 by the neck.

Proceeds from this event will support Slow Food NYC’s Urban Harvest Program, which provide good food education and access to food that is good, clean and fair for NYC kids.

Where: Jimmy’s No. 43 – 43 East 7th Street (between 2nd & 3rd Avenues), Manhattan
When: Sunday, May 22 – 6pm to 8pm
Tickets: SFNYC and CHNY members: $25 / non-members $35
