Marcus Aurelius and "The Fundamental Dogmas of Stoicism"

So: what's Stoicism about, anyway? Since it's been a while since our last meetup, you may have forgotten! That's okay; at this meetup, we'll get back into the swing of things by going over the fundamentals again.

Dave Kelly has authored a document online outlining "the fundamental dogmas of Stoicism" with supporting text from Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. Our next meetup will be focused on describing, discussing, and debating the fundamental tenets of Stoicism using this text as groundwork for our discussion.

Please read "The Fundamental Dogmas of Stoicism" in full to prepare for the meetup, and come with 2 or 3 specific points you would like to bring up for discussion and debate.

This will mark the beginning of a transition from reading ancient texts into formal and informal writings by modern authors on Stoicism to see what they have to say about Stoicism, and if and how it can be applied to modern life. See you all soon!

    Good to see you all
re guilt v shame, here are 2 contrasting views from
: “shame is a violation of cultural or social values while guilt feelings arise from violations of one's internal values” (cultural anthropologist)
"The experience of shame is directly about the self... In guilt, the self is not the central object of negative evaluation, but rather the thing done is the focus." "While guilt is a painful feeling of regret and responsibility for one's actions, shame is a painful feeling about oneself as a person." (psychoanalyst)

It's too bad that I can't make this meetup; I ran into other plans. I'm gonna try to make it next time around, though. Might I suggest Monday meetups, assuming there's no conflict with any of the other members' schedules?

I can't do Mondays for the next few weeks due to a previous commitment, but may be able to do that our another weekday night for next month's meeting. Maybe I'll post a poll to ask what's the best time for most people.

Stoicism is one of the primary foundations to my general worldview. Looking forward to meeting you all for the first time!!
