Ate at Eight - "Manhattan On the Cheap"

  • April 18, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Join me again THIS APRIL 18th for Ukrainian, Polish CHEAP eats DELI style in MANHATTAN on the East Village! FOOD was soooo good the last time with 11 people at this very small hole in the wall "restaurant" by STOMP theater in East Village!!

We ate at the counter, got our own bill at the end separately. The waiter was nice and very knowledgeable with his recommendations.

Average bill TOTAL (no tax!) was $13.75 including main dish that comes with vegetable or soup plus a can of soda. One person added desert and hot chocolate and his bill came out to $21.

Yep. Cashola only please.
Read their 4.5 star customer reviews too - 80+ of them. ;-0

Come and experience a real NY hole in the wall diner that's delish!

Yes, they do BREAKFAST too.

Small restaurant for about 15 people -- they will close by 9:30pm - late comers will have to stand and eat by the deli counter.

Direction: Walk to 8th street and 2nd Avenue
Subway: 6 train to ASTOR PLACE , or N/R train to 8th street

Some may prefer a more "trendy" eating place than "Stage" but this restaurant goes back to when there was a substantial Ukrainian community in the Lower East Side. The working locals expected really good, cheap, Eastern European soul food and that's what places like "Stage" delivered. With Kiev gone and Veselka simply not what it used to be, Stage continues the sturdy tradition of food from the roots and the heart, while the trendy places come and go.

If you want to know what an important but increasingly historical part of the soul of New York City is really about, with its many waves of hard-working immigrants and shining dreams, and if you appreciate good, unpretentious and inexpensive food, you owe it to yourself to stop by this easily-overlooked spot and savor some of the surprising pleasures inside.
