Beginner Game Development Workshop

In this beginner level workshop we will cover the basics of game designprogramming and what frameworks to use. If you don't have any previous experience making games you will have a great opportunity to learn more about what goes into making a game.

Each month we will pick a new framework to learn with a focus on making a new game each month. Sample code will be provided to help get you started with an emphasis on game design over coding.

Each workshop will have a 1 hour lecture or discussion followed by 2 hours of hands on time where you are free to play around with the provided code, work on your own game and get help on anything you are having issues with.

Month Schedule:

First week - Monthly Framework Introduction. Each month we will talk about a new framework. To get started we will alternate between ImpactJS (HTML5) and GameMaker.

Second Week - Show and tell where we highlight some of the work we are doing

Third Week - Polish and bug fixing so we can focus on any issues you may be having with your game before launch.

Fourth Week - Release your game. We will go over what you need to release your game.

This meetup was excellent. Coming from the financial sector , it gave me an intro to the gaming sector. The meetup was very informative, and having Jesse as a teacher made this meet up an A+

This workshop was so much better than my already high expectations thought it would be. Jesse is an amazing teacher. The workshop was exciting, informative, and helpful to people at a variety of experience levels.

For the first meetup it was very well organized, a lot of information was also given. The location was more than appropriate. I look forward to more meetups.

Thank you so much for doing these. A like-minded environment makes everything so much more focused and effective and I can't begin to say how important that is for me specifically and I'm sure a lot of others. It gets me fired up to make something really cool!

Great meetup, I am excited to see more theory as well as application. Also Jesse seems to have a ton of knowledge and experience to share and the meetup space couldn't be better - more coffee and I think it'll be 5-stars moving forward, EZmode.

Thanks everyone for coming out. Based on how this went, I have some ideas on how to make the next one even better. I'll be posting my slides and more details for next week's workshop very soon.

Really good introduction for newbies. Great presenter, great material, and a nice mix of game makers. I look forward to future sessions.

Great meetup. We were able to get a quick prototype of our game working in game maker already, as we spent the hour work session drafting our game design doc. Thanks for putting this together.

On which platform are we developing
    Mac or win7/8

    February 14, 2013

    • Dave V.

It can be used anywhere, abe. HTML5/JS, especially with impact (the framework we'll be using) can be deployed in a web browser, so it will work on any of these OSs.

Jesse - I love this idea. Thanks much for doing this. You mentioned picking a new framework each month -- does this mean the workshop will restart each month with a new framework, or is it more of an evolution. Look forward to participating.

Jesse, thx for the workshop. Any pre-download needed for Mac? Can we use the game framework for mobile?

    February 14, 2013

  • Dave V.

I'd suggest you guys start by getting ready for it.

In order to get impact running on your machine you'll need software for a server running on your computer. I did it last night, and honestly it couldn't be any more simple. I'm running Win7 and Win8 and it works fine on both: Download XAMP from this link:
    http://www.apachefriends.org/en...

You can use the lite version or the full one, but I did the full version. From there, you hit one button to install it. Launch it from your desktop, and wah-lah, Impact will work for you. The first 2 pages of this guide had me up and running within 2 minutes of downloading. http://dalibor.dvorski.net/down...

I will also walk through how to setup Impact on people's computer. We'll have 2 hours to work through it and I have some demo games people can play with and start customizing. I will focus on Impact for the advanced workshop and we'll see what the skill level is like in the beginner one.

    Hi Jesse,
Is Saturdays lessons the first week?

    Thanks!

    February 11, 2013

    • Jesse F.

Yes Saturday is the first "lesson" but I don't think it will as structured as that. I figure this Saturday we'll just have an open dialog and see what everyone is interested in learning then go from there.

    Seeya there!

    February 10, 2013

  • Jeff S.

Any chance we can get some Sunday sessions?

    February 8, 2013

    • Jesse F.

Probably not, sorry. Saturday is a happy compromise between people not having to take off of work during the week and still getting a day to spend with their families.

      February 8, 2013

  • Jesse F.

I will update the description to let people know you should bring a laptop. I kind of assumed people would but it's going to be hard to make computer games without one although I am totally open to having people make board games too :-)

    February 8, 2013

    • Brian M.

Will there be outlets for power? I don't have a battery for current laptop.

      February 8, 2013

    • Jesse F.

I am not sure which space I got but there should be outlets. I think for the first one we will just have a discussion and figure out what people want to work on so it's not critical if every has power.

      February 8, 2013

  • Jesse F.

Also I should mention that you are all welcome to stay and hang out during the "advanced" class if you want to continue working on your game or learn more about coding. No need to feel obligated to stay the entire time. The space is open for everyone to come and make games all day long.
