Premiere Meetup for NY Marijuana Business Association (MJBA)

  • Mar 25, 2014 · 7:00 PM

Hello, fellow canna-preneurs! Welcome to the Green Rush!! This is the initial meetup for NY MJBA. Our guest speakers for this event include Noah Potter, the organizer of the NYC Cannabis Parade and a member of the NY Bar Association committee on drug reform, and David Rheins, the CEO of the Marijuana Business Association (MJBA) who is flying in from Seattle.  We also hope to have a representative from NY NORML. Bring your business cards, as this is a networking event with a cash bar.  Thanks to the folks at Social Bar, 795 8th Ave between 48th and 49th, for hosting this event! I look forward to seeing you there.

Definitely a success. It seemed like an very good turnout and there was a diverse mix of people, interests and experience in the legal marijuana industry. Everyone seemed to have an entrepreneurial bent and sense that canna-businesspeople are ahead of the curve (right now in NY/NJ, etc).

Good meet up. As someone who is looking to learn more about the legislation and potential business opportunities, I was hoping for more information/ speakers but overall a great first meet up for this group

    2 · March 25, 2014

  • Nairb

A nice introduction to what this group is about. Not a bunch of info on or about the Canna industry, although I don't think that was the focus this go around. This was a meet and greet event.

Hey Don, sorry but I'm too sick to come tonight. I was really looking forward to the Meetup but I'm coughing my head off and I don't wanna get anyone sick. I'll be there next month unless you have something sooner. Good luck tonight, Mike

Don, I may be able to come but only from 7-8, will it still be worth my while and get some substantive info and networking out of it? Or I can wait for the next gathering and perhaps you and I can trade converstaions?

    March 24, 2014

    • Don

Thom, if you are there for even one hour, and you're serious about canna-business, then it will be worth your while. But please don't wait for the next meeting to reach out to me to discuss your business objectives.

I'm reading a lot of the comments and some of you have no clue what's going on in the mmj field. Do some research, learn somethings before you post your questions. You can clearly see who is just here to try to earn a quick buck. For one there is a cannabis culture & the ones who make it in this field(mmj) are the ones who understand that culture. Fyi NJ has the worst mmj in the country. For the people advertising land and property to grow that's illegal & you are putting your self and this group in danger. Please stop. Marijuana is only legal in two states Washington and Colorado. Everywhere else it is illegal

    Hi Don,
Have you ever checked out culturefix, its a gallery and bar on LES and as long as everyone buy 2 drinks they are flexible with the space.

I'd like to confirm the venue by mid-week next week. I have another person looking, too, in midtown.

      February 26, 2014

    • Don

Hi, Julia! Did you get my email? I'm looking for a formal confirmation from the restaurant to make the announcement.

      March 6, 2014

  • Ty

I could talk to my friends at Preserve 24 in the L.E.S. in regards to a location. I think they would welcome us happily. Or you could give them a call Don.

    March 6, 2014

    • Don

Hi, Ty! I believe we have a location thanks to Julia Park. I'm just waiting on a confirmation email from the restaurant / bar and hope to announce tomorrow!!

Unfortunately, I'll be out of town for our first meetup, but just curious: I'm a rookie to the business side of this industry - what has everyone been reading to stay current (blogs, online mags, etc)? Thanks, all and I look forward to meeting everyone at the second meetup.

I feel like it's time to really decide what's important and take action to achieve, and pursue what we want. On that note whats does the group think about the industry and how it might change the united states.

Jeiby- by decriminalizing cannabis, we prevent otherwise law-abiding citizens from being persecuted by the law and, potentially, going to jail. Decriminalization of marijuana also frees the law to focus on more pressing issues- this will save hundred of millions of dollars better spent elsewhere. The third major push for legalized and/or medical cannabis is the tax windfall states will enjoy once this plant starts getting taxed.

      February 28, 2014

    • Ty

Absolutely!! And they could build more schools instead of prisons

      March 6, 2014

  • Jeiby V.

    Hi Ganjapreneurs!!!
I hope most of the members had the opportunity to watch the feature last night on CNBC, in my opinion I've never felt ever more sure and excited about pursuing my goals in the MMJ industry. It's funny how life, people and situations change I never thought that in my life time I'll witness something similar to prohibition taking place. I come from very strict family background were smoking mary jane is looked down upon and it's funny how my family perspective changed once they became more educated.
Face it in the world we currently live in to many things is bad for us but we still we continue to indulge our selves. Like everything else it comes down to us to take full responsibility for our own actions. It goes to show how powerful we are as people, it always one person to start a movement if it weren't for Mason Tvert and others like him we would of not made it this far which goes to show the power of unity and working with others. Hi everyone just wanted to let group know that cnbch is showing a new documentary on Colorado recreational marijuana. Also I have a place where we may possibly be able to hold the meet up. It's located in NYC easy to get to by train

    1 · February 26, 2014

    • Mike L

Thanks Jeiby, I just checked cnbc...they're showing the Colorado marijuana program at 10pm if folks are interested.

      February 26, 2014

    • Don

Thanks for the heads up, Jeiby. I actually got to screen this with David Rheins, the CEO of MJBA, in Seattle a couple of days ago. We're hoping to publish a Q&A with NBC's Harry Smith on http://MJNN.net, the MJ News Network.

      February 26, 2014

  • Sergey L.

Just quick question. Are such meetings legal? Or could authorities charge us for conspiracy to sell drugs?

    February 23, 2014

    • Don

MJBA is an association and we hold monthly meetings in various states. We are not involved in handling any cannabis products and smoking or consumption or sale of any cannabis products is not allowed at our meetings. For our March meetup, we will have speakers to address the NY and NJ market opportunities. So to be clear -- don't attend this meeting if you think it's about selling cannabis to participants, or that we're throwing a party. We are not doing anything of the kind.

However, if you are interested in learning more about the opportunities in New York's and New Jersey's emerging legal medical cannabis market, by all means, please plan to attend.

    last part:

It would be worthwhile to create an educational forum in NYC that would bring people in from other states to discuss their strategies. We can then evaluate the strategies and adapt them as appropriate to the unique race/class/religion/gender identity context of NYC. Disclaimer: This is not legal advice; it's political analysis as informed by my legal training.
I discuss these issues more fully at my blog - psychedeliclaw.com.
Also there is a longer draft of what I posted here which I can share upon request.

    1 · February 21, 2014

  • Noah P.

    continued:
I believe that the task at hand is to engage local government here in NYC, optimally in coordination with similar groups working in the other metropolitan areas and identify and engage stakeholder groups, as has been done in other states: unions, trade associations, professional associations, related industries, healthcare professionals, attorneys, accountants, insurance brokers, etc. It is definitely necessary to engage the stakeholder bureaucracies: health, police, social services, and taxation, among others.

It is necessary to develop strategies for different political targets: the Mayor, the City Council, the Borough Presidents, and the Community Boards. I think the best approach is to convince the Council to hold public hearings on legalization.

I say the following as a commentator, not as anyone's lawyer: There are two pending bills in the New York State legislature: (a) a medical-use only bill ("medical marijuana") and (b) full-scale general adult use legalization bill ("tax and regulate").

I appreciate very much everyone's eagerness to begin networking (having articulated the thought myself) and I think it is very productive to begin talking about areas of common interest and synchronistic skill sets and resources. However, I also agree with Bindu that people who want to begin making money now should start learning in depth about what is happening. see next

Looking forward to connections and learning about industry. My opinion is that this type of business is similar to the bar and liquor industry in that you have to treat it like a business and a profit center and it will be a very viable business.
