Our Halloween Event: Apocalypalooza II

"You either hang on to your morals and die,

or do everything you need to survive."

- Joel, The Last of Us

"Imagine that you are creating

a fabric of human destiny

with the object of making men

happy in the end,

giving them peace and rest at last,

but that it was essential and inevitable

to torture to death

only one tiny creature -

that baby beating its breast with its fist,

for instance -

and to found that edifice

on its unavenged tears:

would you consent

to be the architect

on those conditions?

Tell me,

and tell me the truth!"

"No, I wouldn't consent,"

said Alyosha softly.

Announcing Our Second-Ever

Apocalyptic Event

Apocalypalooza II:

Treading on Mighty Thin Ice

Anyone with any sensitivities should stay far away...

Here is our agenda for

three rounds of discussions.

Please try to arrive by 6:30 at the latest.

6 PM Social

7 PM Round One

8 PM Round Two

9 PM Round Three

$14 Grove Specialty Cocktails for $7!

$5 Beers

$7 Red, White, Moscato Wines

$7 House Vodka Drinks

$10 House Champagne

$10 Mimosas

49 Grove is well-known for its

Specialty Cocktail and Food Menu (PDF)

and they are offering all specialty cocktails

at half-price all evening for this event

We have short social breaks between rounds.

To meet and debate with many friends (old & new),

everyone joins together into new groups for each round.

Join us for food, drinks, and discussions.

A New York Philosophy event combines food and drink,

an upscale Manhattan intellectual environment,

and a social atmosphere for New Yorkers

to get together, mingle, and discuss interesting topics.

How to Attend the Live Event

All members in good standing are welcome to RSVP and attend.

Due to the limited number of spots,

past no-shows must pay the $10 no-show fee online

before RSVPing for this event.

Members with a 'no-show' title next to their RSVP

will have their RSVP removed without notice.

See our Attendance Policy for details.

Over the course of the evening, members gather in small groups for discussions. Between each discussion round, everyone socializes and has a chance to order food/drink. With a chance to join several groups throughout the event, attendees have a chance to meet many others while engaging in spirited debates in a highly social atmosphere.

This is *not* a typical meet-and-greet open social,

this is a "Cocktails & Conversations"-styled event

with three rounds of active and challenging debates.

It will be crowded, it will be edgy, it will be fun -

we ask everyone to keep noise levels down

and participate in all discussions.

A great event. The first two rounds had particularly good questions.

Interesting perspective and discussion with you and your friend on "what works" or "don't work" in different circumstances in the "real world." :D

Is the address really 49 Grove? I think there was a different address at one time.

  • Louiza

    What are the topics?

    October 29, 2013

    • John

@louiza - the three rounds for tonight's event are pretty dark :-). We look at ancient civilizations (and why they disappeared) in the first round and the modern world (and its own profound challenges) in the second. The third round is quite intense, with the imaginings of two nightmare scenarios. And it's not even Halloween yet :-)

I'm sorry, but I'm not quite clear what the topic of discussion is from the description…

    1 · September 25, 2013

    • Sheryl

Same here - I'm unclear on the topic. I wish the moderators would explain more what this is about.

Since the description said this topic was done in the past, I went back to try and find it. The name was different, which didn't help, but I think I found it. However, the description on the first one was equally unclear:

      Sounds fun!

I'm very interested in making this night, but have class on Tuesdays. I can leave a little early, but my two concerns are: RSVP'ing and not being certain I'll be able to make it on time; arriving with sufficient time to join in on round 3. Any comments on these? Due to the structure of the night, it seems like not RSVP'ing and showing up if and when I can could be disruptive.

    September 25, 2013

    • John

@colin - the discussion rounds are 7, 8, and 9. Honestly, we try to save some of the more evocative questions for the last round. If you have scheduling questions, contact me directly and I'll try to help :-)
