An Evening of Religious Extremism, at Irish Rogue (limit 65)

An overflow event has been scheduled for March 5 at Telephone Bar (
http://philosophy.mee.... Feel free to attend either the event at Irish Rogue or the event at Telephone Bar. The topic for this event is Religious Extremism. The theme is perhaps more controversial than some of our usual topics. This event is also a bit different in format than usual. After an hour of socializing and introductions, we will be showing two new one-hour documentaries that have been getting a lot of press these days, followed by open discussion. One documentary looks at Christian extremism; the other examines Islamic extremism. This should be an evening of stimulating ideas and intense discussion. Come prepared to engage in some spirited debate! We have invited a few members of some other groups who have expressed interest in participating in the discussions. This event is in the private upstairs lounge at Irish Rogue in Hell's Kitchen. ********************************* Agenda: 6:30 PM: general mixer 7:30 PM: showing of Alexandra Pelosi's "Friends of God" 8:30 PM: showing of Kopping and Shore's "Obsession" 9:30 PM: at-large discussions ********************************* About "Friends of God": "The documentary is a good-natured travelogue: it glances on the more intolerant and grotesque manifestations of Christian fundamentalism and also the faith's vast following and political clout." Alessandra Stanley, New York Times "The daughter of the most prominent liberal voice in the land visits the enemy camp - which happens to sprawl from points east of San Francisco all the way across the country to points west of the Hudson... As travel companions go, Pelosi is inquisitive, sympathetic, wry, mostly nonjudgmental and has a fine eye for detail." Verne Gay, Newsday ********************************* About "Obsession": "Obsession shocked the audience with its carefully constructed, objective, and fact-based examination of radical Islam today. Powerful would be an understatement in describing the impact of this film." Drew Mcweeny, AintItCool.com "Obsession is both scary and riveting... Obsession should serve as a wake-up call to the free world to confront the threat now, before it is too late." Joel Surnow, Executive Producer "24" ********************************* The event fee covers the screening fee and incidentals. Irish Rogue is offering some drink specials for the entire evening for this event.

I like the movies and the discussion, but I wish the movies were a bit shorter in length. Great idea, though.

Interesting contrast of movies. It would've been helpful to have a greater diversity in religious backgrounds, nonetheless I had very stimulating and fun conversations.

I enjoyed meeting new people and learning about the effects of religious extremism. The films were a good choice and provided ample discussion, but I think most of us, including myself, were mostly there to socialize.

I'd not change my group, but suggest MC to pole all of us after movie, as I only met a few other opinions. Great idea to show both sides!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
