Evolution, Design, and Selfish Genes, at The Village Pourhouse, Limit 75

  • The Village Pourhouse

Our next philosophy meeting is on evolution and is centered around one of the most significant books on evolution and natural ethics, Richard Dawkins's "The Selfish Gene." This seminal book has laid the foundation for a widely-accepted, yet still controversial, perspective on how living things develop and why they act the way they do. For this event, you are requested to read the book. If you show up and have not read the book, well, we will have a special section just for you :-). At the very least, please read the Wikipedia summary. The location is at the Vegas Room at The Village Pourhouse, the back room of a popular spot in the East Village. The discussions will begin at 7PM; there is a happy hour and social from 6-7, so get there early! For the happy hour, there will be: - $1 Bud and Bud Light Drafts - 2 For 1 Sauza Margaritas - 2 For 1 Absolut Cocktails - 2 For 1 Level Cocktails Hope to see you there! John

The format of trying to force people to get through the questions handout while at the same time periodically shifting people bewteen the small groups kept breaking up conversations just as they got going.

Well, it's always nice to have discussions with interesting people. I think the discussions for this event would have been more satisfying if everyone read the book and spent time beforehand going over what Dawkins is actually saying. Of course there were some people who didn't read the book entirely and had a very good grasp of the concepts.

I thought the questions guiding the discussion where well thought out. I would have liked to see dedicated moderators assigned to groups to keep the discusion on track.
