Cocktails & Conversations - The Big Three: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle

This event combines

food and drink,

a casual Manhattan intellectual environment,

and a social atmosphere

for New Yorkers to get together, mingle, and discuss.

How to Attend the Live Event

All members in good standing are welcome to RSVP and attend.

Due to the limited spots at our events,

anyone who has been a no-show for a past event

must pay the $10 no-show fee online before RSVPing for another event.

See our Attendance Policy for details.

Over the course of the evening, members gather in small groups for discussions. Between each discussion round, everyone socializes and has a chance to order food/drink. With a chance to join several groups throughout the event, attendees have a chance to meet many others while engaging in spirited debates in a highly social atmosphere.

This is *not* a typical meet-and-greet open social,

this is a "Cocktails & Conversations"-styled event

with three rounds of active and challenging debates.

It will be crowded, it will be edgy, it will be fun -

we ask everyone to keep noise levels down

and participate in all discussions.

The topics were good, but Chelsea Manor was a poor venue. There were lines for the bathroom, one was out of order, they had no toilet paper, they started DJing before we were finished, and the drinks were slightly more than Irish Rogue. I had the feeling they wanted to kick us out.

    Beautiful venue, but very loud.

    Yes too noisy

Meh. Some interesting topics, but in both of my small groups, discussion tended to be dominated by uninteresting (but loud) people. Best part was the informal first hour.

The people were good. The food and service were good. The noise level was abominable.

I really enjoyed this particular meet up simply for the reason that all of the ppl I've talk to were well rounded and were happy to share their knowledge with others.

Thought-provoking evening but..... I wish I could have felt more comfortable with the venue. It was sooooo noisy, crowded and warm in that back room. The worst was the noise level. It was difficult to converse during the discussion and during the mingle time. I had a hard time hearing people and making myself heard. And yes, I realize it was even nosier at the bar area. Maybe I am getting too old for this type of scene but frankly I don't get it. This environment is just not condusive to conversation. I had to leave after the first discussion as I couldn't take it anymore. That's my two cents worth.....

Hope everyone is looking forward - this event has been in development for a while and is obviously going to be quite active :-)

The agenda for the evening at Chelsea Manor includes a social hour from 6-7 (to get acquainted), followed by three rounds of discussions wherein everyone joins into new groups each hour, interspersed with breaks.

If your plans prevent you from arriving at 6, you can still participate in some or all of the discussions :-). Also, be sure to sign in. Cheers!

Unfortunately, due to work responsibilities I will not be able to attend this event. Hope you all have a great time!

Thanks, Scott! Also, after the nice feedback we heard about Chelsea Manor, we have now gotten them to agree to be the new 'home' for NY Phi as our default location for 2013. We are also varying between Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Next week's topics were assembled months ago by a philosophy professor and have been refined since, so the event should be an interesting foray into classical philosophy.

Everyone please note that the date of this meeting was changed a couple weeks ago to June 4. If you cannot make the new meeting day, please change your RSVP to NO (sending a comment alone is not sufficient), because otherwise: Due to the limited spots at our events, anyone who has been a no-show for a past event must pay the $10 no-show fee online before RSVPing for another event.
This sounds like a great vevent and looking forward to seeing everyone.
