An Evening of Enlightenment

Hi Philosophers, Introducing an evening dedicated to exploring Eastern philosophy.

Where, When, What? We will have a room at the
Irish Rogue all to ourselves. Irish Rogue has a full dinner menu, see list below. Show up as early as
6 pm for Early Bird socializing! Event starts at 7 with more socializing, official program starts at 7:30 sharp! We will have an introduction to the topic, followed by rounds of discussion, including a few surprises! Modest cover of $2 for expenses, please bring exact change! This is a joint event with the
Buddhism and Happiness Meetup Group.
Sample topics include:

  • Does happiness come from the outside or from inside yourself?

  • What is the difference between desire and craving/attachment and why is craving/attachment the source of unhappiness?

  • What can you do to lead a happier life?

  • What is the self? What is the ego?

  • When someone does something that makes you angry, how should you react? What can you do to change your anger?

  • What is love? What kinds of love are there?

  • Buddhism talks about loving all beings equally. Is this possible? If yes, is it desirable?

  • What is the difference between compassion, pity, and empathy?

Hope to see you at the event,
John & Suzanne

Discussions were great, and the 2 groups mixed up very well. The 40mn per round were the right amount, even a bit short in some cases. I guess you could also structure it in 4 rounds of 30mn, with one fewer question in each round, if a topic lends itself better to a 4 part. But i thought this worked really well.

A fun evening with a group of open minded and generous individuals.

Also, 35-40 mins is about the minimum for a discussion round; any shorter and we get (deserved) feedback that people did not have time to address the questions. Most groups last night seemed reluctant to end their discussions and split up. As Suzanne says, everyone is welcome to get up and move around a bit if they have finished discussions.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. For group sizes, we stated 'no more than 7 or 8 people' - this seems to be the max that is tolerable so everyone can participate and hear. I saw several groups with 10-11 people - remember, everyone 'self-organizes' - we are all adults here. I used to try to split up large groups, but now I just let things be :-). If your group is too large, leave and join a smaller group (some only had a few people).

And regarding the group sizes, that's also something that was determined by the participants, not the organizers. If you thought your group was too large, you could have taken the initiative to break it up into two. Next time you don't like something, please let us know at the time when we are still able to do something about it.

    Hi Barry and Markian,
you said the sessions were too long, but you know, if you get tired of a topic, you can just get up and leave your discussion group and go to the bathroom or the bar or you can even tell the organizers! We just saw that everyone still seemed happily engaged in conversation, so we didn't want to interrupt you.

Great idea of bringing these different groups together for this event. Had a great time. Made for some divergent but very interesting conversation. I would have to agree with a comment someone else made regarding the our session times. Perhaps shorter intervals between bell tolls. Thanks Susanne, John. Really good.

This was my first meetup and I greatly enjoyed the atmosphere, company, topic and general conversation. I enjoyed having people there from other groups to get different perspectives on the topic. As someone who previously knew next to nothing about Buddhism, I was glad for this opportunity to learn about it - my perspective has definitely changed. It was overall an interesting and definitely enlightening night.

I really enjoy hearing other people's perspectives on life. Last night's event had a great crowd
filled with interesting, nice, intelligent and occassionally funny people.

That was a great evening! I bet I'm a whole lot more enlightened now ? But seriously: The evening was extremely well organized; I met a whole bunch of very nice people; we had some great discussions; it all was very lively and inspiring. Thank you John and Suzanne for having made this happen!

The groups were too large and lasted too long. I was only at one previous meeting and the time spent with each group was about 15 to 20 minutes. Today they were 40 minutes or longer. Way too long.

I met a lot of very interesting, friendly , articulate people. I enjoyed discussing Buddhism and life with others.I liked the idea of moving around to meet other groups.

These monks debating theology remind me of the need to put our actual lives where our thoughts are: their free discussion is no longer possible in their raped&invaded homeland--shut down Communist China now !
