This Wednesday's NY Phi Event at Chelsea Manor

We have 170 RSVPs for this Wednesday's NY Phi event "Mind, Intelligence, and Reason" (please update your RSVP if you can/cannot attend).

Chelsea Manor is an upscale location in a convenient location - the organizers have been working with this new venue on a host of issues - a double-booking, noise problems, and temperamental A/V systems (Dan has been running tests w/ three different media players on their setup). Thank you for your patience.

We are especially looking forward to maximizing their A/V setup for our upcoming Philosophy of Sex and Philosophy of Doctor Who events.

For Wednesday's event, the following three topics make up the agenda:

- "Mind" - think Douglas Hofstadter, et al. on the nature of consciousness and thought

- "Intelligence" - a minefield of topics, such as http://io9.com/10-scientific-and-tech-visionaries-who-experimented-wit-868032557

- "Reason" - as usual, the third round of each event is the most controversial - in this case, is reason the best approach to life and philosophy or no better than faith-based systems? If reason is the be-all and end-all, then why do people of reason disagree?

And, for the final question, as a case study and an illustration of the ease at which "reasonable" people can disagree while having access to the same set of facts, we are opening up the question of how leading intellectuals can reach starkly different conclusions on the Zimmerman/Martin affair.

Hope you can make it - the first hour is an open social, with discussion rounds at 7, 8, and 9.

As always, there is free admission, but we ask everyone to order food and/or drinks so that our group will be welcomed back.

Til Wednesday,

John, Dan, and the Organizer Team
