CRISIS, SHMRISIS or...does a tornado make a butterfly’s wings flap?

We are in a crisis. Not the first, and not the last. A pretty bad one, but historically speaking probably a midsize specimen, maybe a 5.2 on the Richter Crisis scale. Nonetheless one that produces fairly dramatic - and it is argued long lasting - changes in how we view our lives, our jobs, our government, etc...
But do crises themselves really produce huge, long lasting change? When do they? What changes? What do crises tell us about the world, about ourselves?
