"For a nostalgia-tinged night out, head to one venue in New York City where the DJs regularly play hits from the 1980s. With the extensive array of nightlife options in the Big Apple, you have no shortage of choices, for 80s-themed festivities on a grand scale, head to the cities best-known '80s-themed venue in the city, Culture Club (cultureclub.com) ranks high, billing itself as "The World's One & Only 80's Dance Club." The Culture Club has a particularly large following, attracting 1980s-era celebrities to its midtown location and frequently hosting special events. Besides event nights, it offers '80s music throughout the week."
The New York Times:
"This 1980s-themed nightspot goes all the synthy way. There’s a wall-size painting of Adam Ant, a replica of Duran Duran’s “Rio” album cover, an oversize Rubik’s Cube hanging from the ceiling and a dance floor that looks inspired by the memory game Simon. By 11 on a Saturday night, about the time many clubs are just selling their first drink, it’s an inferno of people: bachelorette parties, an occasional Mohawk, and Slim-Jim-thin ties, but mostly just people sipping their God-awful Madonna and Smurf drinks, singing their hearts out about fighting for their right to party, and Safety Dancing till dawn. And it may be the only place in the city where a guy wearing baggy overalls with no shirt underneath and coming on to a girl with a line like “With you in that dress, oh, my thoughts I confess, verge on dirty ... come on, Eileen!” might stand a chance."
New York Magazine:
"The Culture Club is like a surreal high-school gym dance where the chaperones are stone-faced security guards wearing Peace Patrol T-shirts and the Heathers are a gaggle of inebriated 30-something bachelorettes performing the electric slide on a small light-up dance floor. Floor-to-ceiling murals of Debbie Gibson, Prince, et. al. add ammunition to the secret hunch that the silver Delorean hanging over the bar has transported you back to the future. The curacao-saturated Smurf drink is served in a plastic commemorative cup the size of a small bucket. If that fails to get you into the mood, take a breather from 80s power pop on the bleachers under the giant neon-rimmed ET moon. Should all of this hit you like a bad acid-washed pair of jeans, adjust your flux capacitor to time warp you to the 90s. Upstairs, Nerve-Ana might deliver a different decade but the smell of post-teen spirit is just as intense. More specialty drinks with names like Liquid Prozac can be found, along with a Peach Pit After Dark elevated dance floor, replete with life-sized cutouts of the 90210 cast. Those seeking escape from the ice-ice babies doing the running man to contemporary hip hop can hide out in the gutted replica of OJ's white Ford Bronco. There are seats and tables inside."
Come dance the night away
to the greatest songs of the 80s!
