Startup Pitch Night

The primary purpose of this Meetup is to help you find a co-founder to launch or grow your start-up or to help you become a co-founder by joining an existing start-up. Perhaps you need a tech co-founder or an industry-based co-founder, for example.

The secondary purpose of this Meetup is to help you become acquainted with investors, advisers, and mentors that can become instrumental in helping you build or refine your start-up team and in obtaining or increasing angel funding and/or venture capital.

Come join the group and attend this Meetup event - for the networking opportunities, hearing new business ideas, learning about new technologies, hearing about start-up resources, and to present what you are looking for to the group.

Could everybody please answer this Google Form whether you plan on making a pitch? Even if you do not plan on making a pitch, please fill it out so that we get a better idea of how to manage the time properly.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsh...

Here is our suggested format that you use for your pitch. You can always do it your own way.

Who are you and what is your background? (5-10 Seconds)

What is the problem that your product is solving? Or, begin with a story (10-20 Seconds)

Explain the product and how it solves the problem (10-20 seconds)

Who do you need on your team (a developer, marketing, designer?) (5-10 seconds)

... and we think Bar 13 would be the best, which is round around the corner from Pivotal Labs, as the venue after 8:30 so that we can network further.

You know fellow cyber-founders, the very folks that have broadcasted their displeasure with this or that or about how many of this or that type of person... are folks that have given us all practically NO INFO about themselves in their profiles. Since a small portion of the membership provides enough information in their profiles to know even what industry they are in (which is understandable since Meetup profiles are public) we, as organizers, can't possibly be expected to know what the mixture is and how to proceed from there. Let's relax, stay positive, and recognize that one of the primary purposes of any Meetup is to discover who everyone is and to develop a cohesive understanding as to what is needed moving forward to the next Meetup to benefit the most people. Keep in mind that how one relates publicly to strangers or people recently met is something potential business partners will take notice of, I'm sure. I hope it wasn't anticipated that one Meetup would be miraculous.

Maybe Tom is right. Maybe the focus of the meetup should be pitch/idea critique, not meeting collaborators. In which case, I'd say the best mix would consist of people who have pitches (aspiring founders), people who have successfully pitched (current founders), and people who buy pitches (angels and VCs). If that's so, it changes the dynamic and how you approach finding more members.

    • Ayush N.

Wes, that is a good thought and it looks like we will gravitate towards that. However, meeting other co-founders means it could be just about anyone and not necessarily technical co-founders. Since technical co-founders would also be interested in making pitches, they will also be there and attendees can potentially network and work together. They kind of go hand-in-hand, but just that we are focusing on one side of it - which is the pitch. We do not control who comes to the meetups, so that we cannot ascertain what "type" of people will be there. But as you rightly realized, there is a dearth of technical people and if you can bring your friends too, that would be great!

I proposed an event last night where we could try to invite other groups, particularly the hacker groups and the girl developer groups. Then have colored name tags not for each type of person, but for people looking for work vs. teamed up people. I put together a long list of groups for each type of startup person (designers, big data, front-end engineers, mobile app builders, back-end engineers).

http://www.lvanys.org... - just because I really care about literacy and I don't think Tom read the first sentence of the description for the event. "The primary purpose of this Meetup is to help you find a co-founder to launch or grow your start-up or to help you become a co-founder by joining an existing start-up." Reading matters. My mistake.

    • Ayush N.

@Justin: Thank you for bringing that to my attention. We definitely need to fix the event description. We will make all the other fixes by the end of the weekend. Thanks :) If there is anything else that you noticed is contradictory, if you could bring that to our notice, that would be great!

@K.C. makes a good point. There may actually be a handful of us already in this group who can help direct this initiative. After wasting a fair amount of time looking for an individual to do the work, I instead picked up some books and started hacking away myself. This is a great way to 1) learn 2) get some kind of prototype to show 3) show potential CTO cofounders that you are serious and dedicated.

Thank you for all the feed backs so far. We would love to hear more from you. It was the first time the current organizing group managed the meetup, so we are aware that there were possible short comings from our side. We will post an update for the next meetup based on all the feed backs (hopefully) by this weekend.

    Hi everyone,

I am a founder at Vngrs, an offshore development company that focuses on NY based startups. We are located in NY/Istanbul with active clients and proven track record. Previously, I co-founded SocialWire, ( https://angel.co/socialwire ) a SF based SaaS startup and a couple of other startups in Istanbul. (Fyonk - Social Gifting & iletken - SaaS Recommendation Engine for e-commerce)

Coming from the startup world, we know what startups are going through. It is hard to acquire talent and its very hard to work with offshore teams. Most of the time, it doesn't work.

We make outsourcing work for startups by working closely with startup CTO's as a part of their team, communicating daily and using agile techniques. I am here to help startup founders/CTO's with their development efforts. I'd like to have a chat and discuss how can we help if you are in need of a development team.

There is a growing open science movement that's raising awareness about controversial practices in peer review and publishing. As gatekeepers, publishing companies systemically impose limitations and restrictions to the flow of scientific literature, whereas today's web technologies present unprecedented opportunities for scientific progress. Coming from an academic background in science and technology, I've undertaken an initiative to design a Cloud Review System that allows researchers to publish, review, and share papers. Fortified with a semantic rating system and activity & impact tracking, it is an open-sourced and crowd-powered solution to an inevitable shift in how sciences operate. I'm seeking developers and other team members who are passionate about empowerment through knowledge. If interested, please contact me through www.meritocracyhq.com or at [masked]

I liked the open-mic format, however, once that was over it was a bit organized. To the organizer's credit, they tried to assemble different groups, but they didn't get the response they were looking for.

Great group, cool event, too many co-founders vs. technical startup-seekers

    August 9, 2012

This was a good idea, but last night demonstrated a very problematic execution of which I hope the organizers take note. After all the pitches, it became clear there was a room full of CEOs almost all looking for CTOs who were not present. Entrepreneurship is about capitalizing upon opportunity, and last night demonstrated there is a unique opportunity with this group. Developers are worth their weight in gold these days in New York and entrepreneurs need to show their idea has some bones to it before a CTO is going to jump ship on their current ideas for it. It could be of value to this group to find a few developers who are already working on projects to listen to the pitches and recommend to these CEOs what technical skills they could develop themselves to build a minimum viable product. There are few excuses these days for not learning some front and back end code. And if your idea is too large to execute without a pro, the room could help steer the CEO to a potential MVP.

I am making project management software that works offline, works on any of your devices, and uses your Dropbox or Google Drive as storage. Check out Taskstrike.com I'm looking for a either a business dev or someone who works in project management or enterprise sales.

I think my startup will change the world of online software. And I'm looking for other people with the ability to change the world and want to do great things.

Holla at me at the meetup.

  • Brian

    Hi.

My name is Brian and I am a marketing/finance guy looking to build cool things.

With new places to shop online appearing everyday, people need 1 cohesive platform to share their online shopping/browsing with friends in a dedicated space. People also need a way to keep track of and compare things they have come across and purchased.

MoreAgora.com will provide a truly global and immersive social shopping experience by integrating your existing social networks with the best products/deals that you find anywhere online. MoreAgora allows you to share the best of the web with your friends and foster social interaction around commerce (existing sharing options tend to limit your options to interact with your friends around an ecommerce item).

I am looking for a technical co-founder to help me continue to build out the product to an mvp and launch within the next few months.

My name is Richard Lau. I am the founder of WayPoint. It is an application that aggregates you and your friend's check-in history and is displayed back to you on a location-based map. It allows you to see where you're friends have been to within a 2-5 mile radius. If your friendcommendations doesn't help, we will have suggested recommendations nearby by using algorithms based on the places you and your friends have been to. Think of it as Kayak for check-ins. Initial integration will be with foursquare, facebook, yelp. I am looking for a technical co-founder and a UX/UI co-founder. I am currently gathering data by conducting random surveys on the street while making wireframes for a prototype. I look forward to meeting everyone tonight. thank you

Hi all, my name is K.C. McLeod and I founded Vyer Films (www.vyerfilms.com), a pay-to-stream service that curates the best films from around the world with little or no prior U.S. distribution. We bring these films to discerning U.S. audiences looking for something new, unique, or simply different from what's available at the local multiplex. We've released some great film and are proud of our technological accomplishments, like being the first independent streaming service to work in browser on iOS, and now we're looking for a CMO. Interested in the intersection of the arts and tech, talking to customers and drilling down into questions like "what gets a person to watch a film" and "what do they want to talk about after?" Give a shout.

I'm not quite in the Tech business. I am a Film Maker. My last film was distributed world wide. The distributor is making all the money. This time I will self distribute. The proceeds will be shared by the investor and myself. I have acquired no cost advertising nation wide. This is a formula for success, experience with backing. I'm looking for 50K to make this happen. The proceeds will be paying for years. [masked]

Hey all. Startups, tech, and design are my life. And they all happen to wrap together quite neatly. I am currently working on a startup based in Chicago, but have been exploring the NY scene for a few months. I do design, some front-end dev, misc biz dev and marketing tasks in my tiny team. I've gotten used to handling whatever comes up, though design is my number one passion.

Not looking for anyone/anything in particular, but might meet some people to collaborate on future projects on. :)

If we get a chance, let's talk. Do you have a portfolio anywhere? I'm trying to do something complex for education and an easy UI + beautiful design would help us stand out against what I think is some pretty vanilla competition

I'm Daniel Stone. I'm looking to improve travel directions by discovering the safest route. I'm also looking to develop a social, location based app around walking to school. The app would incorporate safety information like location of crossing guards and integrate safety information from the school, the town, and parents. Other features include check ins and tips. Do you know maps, location based apps, building social features, or making apps safe for children? Talk to me.
