Startup Pitch Night

  • December 5, 2012 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ:
The November 7 event had been postponed to December 5. If you were planning to attend on November 7 but are not planning to attend on December 5 and have not yet changed your RSVP, please UN-RSVP as soon as possible.

THANK YOU!
We appreciate your cooperation in updating your RSVP to be an accurate representation of whether you will be attending the event or watch the event.

60 Second pitches. Here is the suggested format that we recommend you use:

  • Who are you and what is your background? (5-10 seconds)
  • What is the problem that your product is solving? Or, begin with a story. (10-20 seconds)
  • Explain the product and how it solves the problem. (10-20 seconds)
  • Who do you need on your team (a developer, marketing, designer)? (5-10 Seconds)

The formal Agenda for this Meetup:

1) 10 minute introduction from the Organizers.

2) 60 Second Pitches (approx. 30-50 people).

3) Crowd-sourced feedback is submitted from the members.

4) Feedback on the pitches by Florent Peyre - Co-founder and President of CasaHop

5) Acknowledgement of the top pitches and prizes given to the top pitch of the evening!  The total value of the prizes is approx. $900.00!

6) 5 minute conclusion from the Organizers.

7) Networking time!

Note: We hope you can find your co-founders here. However, please remember that the attendees are just those who want to come and we might have a very uneven mix of people, in terms of their skills.

There will be a table for business cards and promotional literature.  Feel free to bring information to share with others.

IMPORTANT!! Bring a smartphone, an iPad, or a laptop in order to be able to participate in the feedback process.

Location for the Meetup:  8th Floor

Some very good pitches were made. I just wished that some of the pitch-makers were around for the networking session at the end. I was eager to learn more about the time scheduling app, the date-planning app, Co-Laboratory, the crowd-sourced urban delivery service, and the spontaneous social meetup service.

Yes that is true. If the guy that had a new ad network idea based on keyword input speed reads this, message me, I might have something for you.

Great event! Would maybe do a twitter hashtag so attendees can snark - I mean constructively criticize - pitches in real-time. #17 - Linkfest.com - check out the POC / MVP and tell me what should be better! (and how my pitch sucked - wasn't really planning to!)

Druce, why don't you create the front to be more graphical, pinterest-style scrolling with huge share/tweet buttons under Every post. You could also rank the stories by ratings, like top stories of the day, top stories of the week, most shared stories, most commented stories, things like this. Make it more interactive.

Hi Druce. I thought your pitch was great. I got the idea right away and could see the value. I like that you're going Lean with you startup. Nice MVP: 1) Primary Content - Check 2) Users/Signup (despite it routing through another domain...tisk) - check ... I imagine the next big assumption you may want to test is whether or not users will find the content interesting. Check your analytics carefully before diving into the UX, then I'd agree with the above but do it raw, fast, and A/B test test test. Good work

How far along does one need to be in order to pitch? Can it just be an idea so far, or should it actually be a legit startup already?

    December 3, 2012

Could be at any stage. You might want to mention what stage you are at though.

Hey Guys, I have been following post regarding Jacob the VC. I’ve noticed that some folks are freaking out about their business ideas maybe being stolen by this Jacob guy. Any veteran entrepreneur or serious investor will tell you that good ideas come a dime a dozen. It’s not about the idea, but about your VISION, execution and your team. Only you the original idea holder, should be able to deliver and communicate passion for it. Unless you have some breakthrough technology that never existed before, you'll always find scammer ready, willing and financially able to steal your idea, modify it and call it his own. Don’t worry about stolen business ideas. Ideas are bullsh!t. What matters is preparation and implementation. Sure you can take appropriate measures to safeguard your ideas, so you can develop them without worrying about losing them, but from the moment you start pitching around you are fully exposed. In fact, legitimate VCs rarely will sign a NDA.

It is not much about being afraid of stealing ideas, but more of using the group to fish for possible illegitimate scams. Everyone i meet have an idea, but the sad part is every one out of 10 people i meet got scammed at least once.

    Druce makes excellent points.

Also keep in mind that if someone purports to receive a "finder's fee" in exchange for finding funding, that person has to be a licensed broker. Being licensed generally limits the liability of the startup in the event the person did not adhere to the strict securities public non-solicitation rules.

Jacob - Thank you for providing clarification of your willingness to connect personally with the group in general and to allow us to learn more about what you are looking for, etc. Welcome! The need and/or desire for privacy is understandable, yet the message board probably just isn't the right timing... This is, afterall, Startup Pitch Night! Only a week away! Myself, Ayush, and Richard will all look forward to meeting you. We'll there early to setup if you'd like to chat for just a few moments then. Thank you Ayush and Richard for reaching out on the board and getting answers for our members!

Not necessarily a propos of anything in particular, LinkedIn and Crunchbase are good resources to check out investors, determine what sectors they invest in, what stage, what geography.

I've met people who styled themselves VCs who didn't bring money to the table but whose model is to package and pitch companies to investors and take a percentage of equity or finder's fee in any successful deals.

I'd venture to say if you pitch to someone and don't know their expertise or focus you're probably wasting your time.

Getting a VC on board, is more then just getting few dollars to back you up, it is like a marriage, there is a big stake on the entrepreneur's end as well as the VC. The VC has to bring his knowledge in the tech area to directly or indirectly mentor and guide the Ent. The relationship has to be transparent from the beginning.
If you wish to use this message board, and specially to approach entrepreneurs as a VC, YOU HAVE TO PROVIDE YOUR CREDENTIALS ONLINE, no matter how limited they are. Failing to do so will have you kicked out of the group.
I say it again: WE HAVE ZERO TOLERANCES TO SPAM!

Yes it looks like scam. I asked him about credentials and seems like he doesn't have any which is impossible in this community. This VC is a ghost!

    Hi Rafael,

Excuse me but I do not appreciate the scam notice.
Did you take into consideration that I might be busy after 11 PM at night.

I am asking questions in order to narrow down who I set up a meeting with. Taking someone's ideas is unethical and that did not cross my mind.

    Thank you
    Jacob

    Hi my fellow pitchers
I'm really disappointed that the November meetup was postponed to December. I had been training mentally for that glorious 60 sec moment!
In the meantime, could my fellow meetupers help me with a short 8 question Google survey? I promise the multiple choices only take less than 3 minutes to complete ;-) PLEASE CLICK LINK. I will greatly appreciate it. https://sites.google.com/site/chargingresearch2012/

Hi everyone! Just in case you missed or didn't get the email from Meetup, this note is a reminder that tonight's Meetup (Nov 7) has been postponed to the next Meetup date (Dec 5). If you RSVP'd for Nov 7, then you are already RSVP'd for Dec 5. We had updated the date to Dec 5 and the meetup venue. If you need to change your RSVP for Dec 5, feel free to do so. We apologize for any inconvenience. It appeared to be the practical/prudent thing to do when we decided. We look forward to seeing everyone on December 5th!
