So, You Want to Run an Ultra-Marathon?
Each talk will start with a video presentation by from a “Newbie” point of view and will be followed up by two very excellent speakers to talk from an expert’s point of view.
John MacKenzie from Rockland County will speak on Friday, October 4th at 6PM and
Trishul Cherns will speak on Saturday, October 5th at 1PM.
John is an ultra marathoner from Rockland Country and active RRR Member who has just announced he will be running his first 100 mile race.
Trishul who holds 112 canadian ultra records; he is an icon in ultra running!
Each talk will be headed by RRR Member and “newbie” ultra marathoner Gary Scarano.
Topics will include:
Why are people running ultras and why are they becoming so popular?
What does Running Down a Deer Mean?
What NOT to do if you are planning for an Ultra (what I did wrong).
Why should you run an Ultra?
What equipment should you have and not have?
How should you NOT Train (John and Tishul will cover how you should train).
What Ultra’s should you consider?
What is toe running and why is it popular?
Why are people running barefoot?
Bio – John MacKenzie (Friday October 4th, at 6PM)
Local Ultra Marathoner who grew up in Rockland County and ran high school cross country/track at Tappan Zee. Active member in the Rockland Road Runners, Marathon Maniacs and former running coach for the YMCA in Nyack. Has been running ultra marathons for the past 5 years, dozens of trail and road races through out the northeast in all seasons. 3rd place for the Western New York Ultra Series in 2011.
Bio – Trishul Cherns (Saturday, October 5th at 1PM)
Trishul Cherns is an accomplished veteran ultra-marathon runner. Since his first ultra in 1978 he has completed 214 ultra-marathon races from 30 to 3,100 miles. Trishul currently holds 112 Canadian National Records. His accomplishments include:
50 miles in 6 hours, 55 min
100 miles in 17 hours, 40 min
130 miles in 24 hours
221 miles for 48 hours
538 miles for 6 days
1,000 miles in 13 days, 7 hours
3,100 miles in 50 days, 3 hours
He has been a massage therapist for the last 26 years and has coached ultra runners to personal bests in the distances they have chosen.
Bio – Gary Scarano
Gary Scarano has ran a 2:51 marathon (6:30 per mile pace) 28 years ago and ran with the Olympic Torch for the 1984 LA Olympics. He is a “newbie” to ultra-running and ran 3 Ultra’s this year, finishing his last two ultra’s of 50 miles and 62 miles.
