Writers workshop

  • Nov 5, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will meet in Info Commons Room 4.

PLEASE NOTE that we are limiting attendance to better insure that all get a chance to have their writing critiqued.  If our maximum for the week is reached, you have the option of being notified if someone has to change their RSVP to no.  IF YOU ARE ON THE LIST TO ATTEND BUT FIND YOU CANNOT, PLEASE BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR RSVP TO A NO BY MONDAY AFTERNOON AT THE LATEST (except in the rare instance of a true emergency) so all writers can best be accommodated.

Join us for a weekly get together of sometimes frank and hopefully always constructive criticism of your literary work. There is no restriction on the type of genre and only a few rules:

1. Bring up to 6 double spaced typed pages of your work for reading. Additional copies would be helpful in order to allow others in the group to follow along.

2. The author is not allowed to speak while feedback is being provided.

3. The same piece should not be reread at a future workshop.

We will meet every Tuesday at 7 PM on the first floor of the Central Library, unless a meetup is not scheduled for that date due to a holiday or other event. A floor plan link is available at http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/files/pdf/central/floorplan.pdf.

More information about the Brooklyn Central Library, including available public transportation options, can be found at http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/locations/central.

Hope to see all of you there.

Danny

    Hi all,
I'm so sorry to cancel the day before, but I have a meeting that just got scheduled for 5:30 tomorrow! I've been writing like crazy and love the feedback I get from this group, so I'll be sorry to miss it. Hopefully someone else can swoop in and grab my spot!

Considering the difficulties we've all experienced trying to effectively handle the high level of interest in this group, we would appreciate a bare minimum of these kinds of changes. But you are within our Monday afternoon deadline for (hopefully infrequent) changes, and someone else (though unfortunately not Clif!) did get your spot. :-) We look forward to seeing you again soon...

Hey all, I've noticed a lot of last minute cancellations over the past couple of weeks and even though I've been on the waiting list, the cancellations haven't come in time for me to get there. I'm going to take a chance and show up this time, hoping that there will be room. If not, no problem. Hope that's OK.

Your observations are quite correct, despite the strong warnings we've issued to those cancelling at the last minute for non-emergency reasons, and the fact that we will be removing repeat offenders from our membership. On the other hand our current cap of 13 factors in these last-minute cancellations to a degree and it really isn't appropriate to attend a meeting for which you have not secured space. Still I know you, like others, have been having a lot of trouble securing space lately, a situation we're well aware of and are attempting to correct in various ways. So, since you've definitely done the right thing by telling us what you'd like to do, come on ahead THIS ONE TIME but please understand that you may only have "observer" status for this meeting.

thanks for getting back to me holly. i understand, and maybe there'll be a cancellation that i see in time. since i'd really like to get feedback, i'll only show up if something becomes available. regardless, i'm confirmed for next week.

Greetings, Fay, and welcome. Just want to let you know that...as instructional as we would like to think we are!...we're not actually a formal class. We're a group of writers who meet weekly as peers to critique each others' work. Looking forward to seeing you at one of our sessions soon...

Will have to skip this meeting. Hope to be there at the next one.

:-( But I strongly suggest you ask Meetup to let you know when someone changes their RSVP to no. Last week there were actually some spots free at the time of the meeting. (As you know, we're doing all possible to insist that people change their RSVP's, if they must, in enough time to allow those waiting for spots to make use of the openings.) Also we realize how difficult getting a spot has become and are planning to start running not two, but three groups at the same time to accommodate all, starting the following week. Hopefully then all will both be able to attend, and have their work critiqued. (One of the groups won't be through Meetup so we'll still cap it here at 13, but a lot fewer people will be competing for spots.)
